Carmarthenshire projects win building awards
The Local Authority Building Contracts award scheme has seen a number of awards in Carmarthenshire.
The new housing project up to 10 units award sponsored by Parker Plant Hire was won by James Brothers Building Contractors for a development at Ysradowen Farm, Cwmllynfell.
The new housing of larger than 10 units award sponsored by Machnynys Homes went to Charles Church West Wales for their estate at Parc Gwenllian, Mynyddygarreg, Kidwelly.
The estate also won the award sponsored by HIS Technical Indexes for being the best site offering affordable and social housing. The site was created on the former American Optical company land and comprising 54 high energy efficient timber frame housing.
The sustainability award sponsored by energy consultants Melin went to Tycroes Group for their construction of a care home and 40 sheltered housing flats, at Annedd, Llanybyther.
The Cwm Aur development is a £6million integrated care scheme by Grŵp Gwalia in partnership with Carmarthenshire County Council in Llanybydder. Cwm Aur offers people aged 55 and over the opportunity to experience a real alternative to traditional sheltered housing or residential care.
Cwm Aur has achieved an ‘Excellent’ Eco Homes rating.
The award for best public community buildings went to Welsh Heritage Construction for their conversion of a barn to at Dinefwr Home Farm, Llandeilo. The award was sponsored by Machynys Peninsula Golf Club.
The cow shed is a Grade II listed building conversion which demonstrated an excellent example of partnership working in an effort to give a challenging building a new lease of life.
The National Trust as the landlord, Carmarthenshire Council as the tenant, CCW, CADW, the funders - Heritage Lottery Fund and the Rural Development Plan - all had to work together with the skilled team of building professionals engaged.
The outcome is a good example of appropriate conversion of traditional farm buildings to a modern use demonstrating the skills of craftsmen in both its original construction and conversion.
The small commercial award for a development up to £1 million went to contractor RWB Developments for the construction of Gravells new car showroom and 18-bay workshop at Kidwelly. This award was sponsored by LBS Builders Supplies.
It was proposed to redevelop the site to accommodate a new car servicing and MOT servicing facility. The new £3million dealership now boasts an eight-car showroom, 18-bay workshop and exterior space for more than 200 vehicles. The development has utilized renewable energy power sources and improved waste management. This is a flagship development for Kidwelly and Carmarthenshire and has been a huge boost for the local economy.
Winner of the large commercial award over £1-million sponsored by Melin was won by Simons Construction for the Carmarthen Town Redevelopment.
Created on the former Carmarthen market car park, and nestled neatly within the existing market town surroundings – West Wales newest town development has provided the first all multi screen 3D cinema, 1500 space multi storey car park, and shopping and restaurants units a cost of £78 million to develop.
The educational building award went to WRW Construction sponsored by parker Plant Hire for the extension and refurbishment of Morfa School, Llanelli.
The development involved the retention of the existing school building and the construction of a modern new building based within the centre quadrangle of the old school.
The existing brickwork building was completely refurbished and given a 21st centaury upgrade. The new build involved the construction of purpose made classrooms and facilities. The school now forms a focal point for the community with parts of the school open to the public during the evenings.
The standards of workmanship were exceptionally high throughout and testament to the skills employed was that it was difficult to determine the old school from that of the new areas.
Prince Philip Hospital won the best health care building award category for the contractor Interserve specialist breast care unit extension. The award was sponsored by Coleg Sir Gar.
The work involved the extension of the Prince Philip Hospital to provide a state of the art breast care facility whilst at the same time refurbishing wards within the existing hospital.
The project involved an enormous amount of organisation and co-operation between the contractor and the Hywel Dda Health Board itself as normal day-to-day services had to be maintained at the hospital.
The site presented many technical difficulties involving piling, stabilisation of the ground.
The contractors were praised for their adaptability with the client deciding to utilise the lower ground floor and create consulting rooms and offices after the extension work started. This then took precedent over the main extension and was delivered before to the initial extension being completed.
A number of wards during the extensions build were refurbished and upgraded to the standards required; this took great logistical organisation at a working hospital.
