The latest 'View from Richmond Park' column from the Carmarthen Journal . . .
With just over a week to go before the start of the new Welsh Premier League season, it’s time to put the spotlight on the man who will be leading the Carmarthen Town AFC campaign.
Town’s new manager is Tomi Morgan, who is enjoying his second spell at Richmond Park.
Diehard Carmarthen fans will already be familiar with Morgan, but many Journal readers may appreciate a quick Tomi Morgan history lesson.
Morgan was appointed Carmarthen manager for the second time in June, 2010, after player-boss Deryn Brace decided to step down.
Morgan was recruited from Porthmadog, where he had been manager since February 2009, after the club's relegation to the Cymru Alliance.
A fearsome striker in the League of Wales who then became a successful manager, Morgan played for Telford United before becoming player/manager of Aberystwyth Town in the first season of the domestic Welsh league, scoring 21 league goals in 42 appearances.
He won a Welsh Cup medal with Llansantffraid in the famous penalty shoot-out victory over Barry Town at Cardiff Arms Park, scoring the first goal and netting the second penalty after the game had ended 3-3 after extra-time, also adding another 44 goals in 85 league appearances between 1994 and 1997.
After managing Rhayader Town, Morgan spent six seasons at Carmarthen Town. He led to the Old Gold to the Welsh Cup final before qualifying for the InterToto Cup in 2001 as third-placed finishers in the league.
But Morgan departed Richmond Park early into season 2003/4 after a string of poor results and had a brief spell on the coaching staff at Barry Town, also working with Spar Mid-Wales league side Penrhyncoch, where he won promotion to the Cymru Alliance.
Although his playing days were virtually over after he took over the management role at Welshpool Town in May 2004, he appeared four times as a substitute over the next few seasons.
In his playing career, Morgan scored 72 goals from 135 Welsh Premier appearances.
Morgan became the oldest player to take the field in a Welsh Premier match when he came on as a substitute in the 90th minute for Porthmadog against Airbus UK Broughton on Saturday 10 April, 2010, at the age of 53 years 7 months and 7 days.
Carmarthen Town AFC club executive chairman Gareth Jones has appealed for volunteers to help the club following the departure of kit manager Mike Vickers.
“Mike's contribution to the club has been second to none during the period that I have been associated with the club,” said the chairman.
“I doubt whether he has missed a home fixture during the last eight years and he has also attended practically all the away fixtures in South Wales.
“I can now only hope that we are able to get another volunteer to help and replace Mike. Ideally, we need a number of individuals to come forward and offer their services to the club.”
