Songs of Praises at Burry Port harbour

Ten churches and chapels across Pembrey and Burry Port are coming together to perform a Songs of Praise under canvass at Burry Port harbour.
Up to 200 voices will perform a selection of hymns from 3pm on Sunday (Aug 30th). But there will not be an Aled Jones or a Jonathan Edwards presenting this time.
County councillor Pat Jones who is a life-long faithful St Mary’s Church member at Burry Port said there is no reason why the popular hymns festival at the seaside town should not attract the TV show that has been a Sunday favourite for 45 years.
She said: “We have run a few of these events at the harbour and they have been hugely popular attracting crowds of onlookers who have joined in the massed gathering from churches and chapels about the community.
“There have been lots of requests for a repeat of the Songs of Praise we put on two years ago and Carmarthenshire County Council is sponsoring the event with Joint Venture funding with a marquee.
“Hymn sheets and extra seats will be provided for all those who want to join in on the fields fringing the harbour opposite Sea View Terrace.
“The hymns being sung are popular choices of Burry Port Town Band, Burry Port Male Voice Choir, Shoreline Caravan Park and all churches and chapels between St Mary’s in Burry Port and St Illtyd’s Parish Church Pembrey.”
The event was initiated by Cllr Jones several years ago when a festival to celebrate Amelia Earhart’s association with the harbour town had space in one of the marquees on a Sunday.
“People enjoyed it so much there have been requests to make it an annual event.”

'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career.
