Road safety gets the royal seal of approval in Llandovery


HRH the Prince of Wales is to give road safety initiatives the royal seal of approval at the Llandovery Motorbike Weekend.
The Prince will launch the motorbike weekend by starting a parade of bikes around the town on Friday, July 8.
Bikers from the emergency services and the county council’s road safety team will take part in the parade.
The two-day event, taking place on July 8 and 9, will include stalls, attractions, display bikes, a motorcycle treasure hunt, fairground rides and show bikes.
Road safety officers from the council, Dyfed Powys Police and Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service will attend to promote initiatives such as Bikesafe, Dragon Rider Cymru, Biker Down Cymru and the CRASH card scheme.
A number of other organisations will be in attendance including the Institute of Advanced Motorists; RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders, Motorcycle Action Group; Blood Bikes Wales; and GoSafe Wales Casualty Reduction Partnership.
Activities available over the weekend include a three-hour Biker Down course, a Dragon Rider taster session, the chance to sign up for a taster session with the IAM, and ride-outs.
The council’s executive board member for transport Cllr Hazel Evans said: “Road safety is an issue of great concern to a lot of people, which is why the council and partners are committed to reducing accidents on our roads through a number of initiatives.
“It is good to see the give road safety the royal seal of approval through attending this event and launching the parade around the town.
“I hope people go along and support the two day event, it does carry a serious message but it also promises to be a lot of fun.”
The Llandovery Motorbike Weekend is part of the royal couple’s summer visit to Wales, which will include a 100th anniversary celebration of Roald Dahl’s birth with an evening at their summer home in Llwynywermod.
The week-long visit from July 4-8 will see the couple undertake 20 engagements and support the work of their charities, including the Prince's Trust, the Prince’s Foundation for Building Community, PRIME Cymru and Emmaus UK, which helps homeless people.

'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career.
