Latest 'On Song' column from the Llanelli Star

Latest 'On Song' column (about the choral scene in and around Llanelli) from the Llanelli Star.
(Technical glitch this week; they didn't run it!)

There’s something of a dilemma for lovers of good singing this weekend – two excellent concerts on the same night.
On the one hand, you have Côr Meibion Llanelli Male Voice Choir and Côr Meibion Dyffryn Tywi (Vale of Towy Male Voice Choir) performing in Kidwelly.
On the other, you have the Morriston Orpheus Choir performing in Llanelli.
You’ll have to pay your money and take your choice. Whatever you decide, you will be rewarded with some first class singing from our finest male voice choirs.
The Kidwelly concert featuring Côr Meibion Llanelli Male Voice Choir and Côr Meibion Dyffryn Tywi is part of the year-long anniversary celebrations of Kidwelly’s great history - ‘Cydweli 900’.
The concert is at the Princess Gwenllian centre, Kidwelly, on Saturday, November 7 (7.30pm).
The choirs will be sharing the bill with the popular Welsh language mother-and-daughter act ‘Gwenda a Geinor’, soloist Catrin Jones and celebrated wit and raconteur David Vaughan.
The host for the evening will be Dai Jones (Llanilar), of S4C Cefn Gwlad fame.
Tickets are £10 and are available from the Kidwelly Council offices (mornings only), members of Cefn Sidan Rotary Club or from 01554 891176 or 01554 890436.
The event is being sponsored by Gravells Garage and Cefn Sidan Rotary Club.
In Llanelli, the big concert is at Ffwrnes Theatre and is being staged by the Loud Applause team directed by Llanelli concert promoter Cerith Owens.
The annual ‘Night with the stars’ event starts at 7pm (doors open 6.30pm).
The concert will feature talented up-and-coming singers and instrumentalists from the Loud Applause ‘Rising Stars’ stable, along with seasoned and professional performers.
The ‘Rising Stars’ are now becoming familiar names and include vocalists Samuel Morris, Jordan Williams, Daniella Difede, Keely Morgan and Sophie Maliphant, accompanied by Andrew Pike and Rhiannon Williams Hale.
The ‘Rising Stars’ instrumentalists will be represented by Cai Charles (guitar), Ffion Elin Williams (harp) and Rhodri Thomas (trombone).
Appearing with the ‘Rising Stars’ will be the highly-talented jazz singer from Birmingham Anthony Marsden.
Back by popular demand will be the world famous Morriston Orpheus Choir under the baton of Joy Amman Davies and the brilliant violin trio The Singhs (Rakhi, Simmy and Davinder).
The evening will feature musical theatre, classical and opera, jazz, folk and the very best of male voice singing.
There will also be a poignant moment to remember ‘The Fallen’ on the Remembrance weekend.
Hosts for the night are Garry Owen and Robert Lloyd.
Tickets are available from all Carmathenshire Theatres Box Offices – 0845 226 3510.

Next month, Côr Meibion Llanelli will be performing at the brand new Bryn Terfel Theatre at the ‘Pontio’ in Bangor (on Saturday, December 5).
The Llanelli choristers will be the special guests of the celebrated Côr Y Penrhyn from Bethesda.
Côr Meibion Llanelli musical director Eifion Thomas said: “This trip to the stunning new Pontio theatre has been on the cards for some months. The Bryn Terfel Theatre promises to be one of the most prestigious concert venues in the north.
“We are great friends with Côr Y Penrhyn and look forward to what should be a great musical treat in the run-up to Christmas.
“We will be one of the first big events to be staged at the Pontio, a venue which only opened its doors last week.”
Meanwhile, acclaimed Welsh soprano Shȃn Cothi has unveiled details of her first new album in 10 years - ‘Paradwys’ - as well as plans for an exclusive nine-date tour of Welsh churches and chapels.
The tour will take in Llangennech, Llanelli.
Shȃn will perform at Capel Salem, Llangennech, on Sunday, November 29 (7pm).
The new album, her first since ‘Passione’ in 2005, has been released on the Acapela label.
The album features the Nidum Ensemble - comprised of hand-picked musicians from orchestras such as the London Symphony, the London Philharmonic and the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
Players include cellist Steffan Morris (always a favourite with Loughor and Llanelli audiences) and violinists Rhys Watkins, Rakhi Singh and Benjamin Baker.
Also accompanying is the superb pianist Jeff Howard, who has played for Shȃn on numerous occasions over the years and is also responsible for two of the musical arrangements on the album.
Special guests Rebecca Evans, Catrin Finch and Wynne Evans will also be appearing with Shȃn on the tour, as well as current Royal Harpist Hannah Stone, tenor Aled Hall and local children/youth choirs.
The inspiration behind Shȃn's tour was to take world class music out to the rural communities of Wales, not just the main cities of the south.
Shȃn will be visiting venues such as historic churches, chapels and cathedrals that offer a special atmosphere and fantastic acoustics.
