Volunteers who help patients and staff at acute and community hospitals across Carmarthenshire have been celebrated as part of National Volunteers Week.
As part of the 30th Anniversary celebrations of National Volunteers Week, volunteers from the university health board’s Volunteering for Health project and from League of Friends attended a special event hosted by Hywel Dda University Health Board Chairman Chris Martin.
The event celebrating the role of volunteers was a great success with other 60 guests in attendance including League of Friends of the Amman Valley Hospital; Friends of Glangwili General Hospital; League of Friends of The Llandovery Hospital; and Llanelli and District League of Hospital Friends.
The Leagues of Friends support the university health board’s acute and community hospitals and received a Chairman’s certificate of commendation for the invaluable support of their fundraising activities over a number of years which has helped to improve patient services and experiences at all hospitals.
The Chairman of Hywel Dda University Health Board, usually awards commendations to staff who work above and beyond their call of duty to help to improve services. This is the first time that anyone other than a staff member has received a Certificate of Commendation from the Chairman.
Mr Martin said: ‘I am delighted to be able to recognise the work of our unsung heroes and volunteers including the League of Friends across Pembrokeshire.
“The League of Friends are receiving my own Chairman’s certificates of Commendation in recognition of their dedication, hard work and amazing fundraising over many, many years.
“The £10,000s they have raised has improved the patient experience and outcomes in our hospitals and quite frankly we couldn’t have delivered our services without their help and support.”
Volunteering for Health volunteers across the three counties in the last year have carried out 14,000 hours of volunteering resulting in 56,000 patient contacts.
They carry out a variety of roles in acute and community hospitals across Carmarthenshire including befriending, supporting breast feeding mums, meeting and greeting visitors and supporting pharmacy and staff to take prescription drugs to patients on wards.
David Fretwell, head of volunteering services, said: “Our volunteers are wonderful and can really make a difference to patients when they come into hospital, just taking time to sit with a patient and have a friendly chat can be so rewarding for both patient and volunteers.”
Mr Martin added: “The event was an opportunity for me to say a personal thank you, although thank you doesn’t seem enough because they have made such a difference and touched so many people’s lives, helping and supporting their recovery and generally improving their health and wellbeing.”

'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career. "Everyone in the area is hugely proud of her achievements in athletics to date," said Phil. "But we also want to see her go on and do bigger and better things.
