The latest Llanelli Star 'On Song' column

The latest Llanelli Star 'On Song' column about the choral scene in and around Llanelli -

Fans of male voice choirs are looking forward to the first visit of the famous Pendyrus Male Choir to Llanelli.
The charity concert is being staged at Greenfield Chapel, Llanelli, on Saturday, May 3, 7pm.
Proceeds from the evening, which is being staged by Cerith Owens and Loud Applause Productions, will be in aid of the Llanelli and District League of Hospital Friends appeal for a new ultrasound machine to diagnose prostate cancer at Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli.
The Pendyrus Male Choir will be joined on stage by Lleisiau’r Cwm, under the baton of Catrin Hughes, and up-and-coming young tenor Samuel Morris.
The Minister of Greenfield Chapel, Rev David Jones, will be the compere for the evening.
The evening will also feature organ solos by Llanelli-based accompanist Andrew Pike.
The Pendyrus Male Choir is celebrating its 90th anniversary and is one of the oldest choirs in Wales.
The choir was formally inaugurated on May 24, 1924, in the Miners' Federation hut in Tylorstown, a village in the Rhondda Fach.
Within a short space of time, the choir numbered 150 choristers.
Although depleted during the Second World War (many members having been called to the armed forces), the choir did not cease to function.
It regained its former strength during the late 1940s/early 1950s, and has since had a constant membership of about 100 men, drawn from all walks of life in South Wales.
The choir is named after two well-known hill farms in Tylorstown Pendyrus Uchaf and Pendyrus Isaf which lent their names to the old colliery called Pendyrus (later changed to Ferndale Number 6).
Tickets are available through the Ffwrnes Theatre box office, or Theatrau Sir Gar on the internet.
Meanwhile, the popular Lleisiau Hardd choristers are holding a fund-raising ‘Race Night’ at the Harry Watkins in Felinfoel tonight (Wednesday). Pop along and you might find them also singing a song or two!
Popular Llanelli ladies choir Côr Curiad will be performing at a Gala Concert being organised by the Llanelli Masonic Festival Committee at Ffwrnes Theatre on Saturday, July 19.
The evening will be compered by the hilarious TV comedian Owen Money and will also feature the award winning Burry Port Town Brass Band and the renowned National Eisteddfod winning soloist tenor Richard Allen.
On Saturday, April 26 (postponed from January 25), there will be a concert at Pontyberem Hall (7pm) in aid of the Sir Gar WI stand at the Carmarthenshire National Eisteddfod.
Guest artists include Samuel Morris and pianist Sioned Evans. There will be items from WI members. The compere will be Heini Jones. Tickets are £6.
The Llanelli Choral Society are preparing for an exciting choral and orchestral performance this Saturday (April 12) when they perform Britten’s Saint Nicholas and classical highlights by the British Sinfonietta Orchestra.
The event will feature tenor Richard Allen.
