Carmarthenshire A-level students told to celebrate safely

Students in Carmarthenshire are being urged to not to get carried away celebrating success at their A-level.
The Community Safety Partnership wants to ensure students enjoy a safe and trouble-free enjoyment and don’t get carried away to A&E or the cells!
The 18-year-olds are being urged to ‘Think Safe, Drink Safe’ next Thursday after picking up their A-level results – and those still under 18 are being reminded to have an alcohol-free celebration.
They are also being urged to stay out of rivers and lakes, and not to go into the sea if they have been drinking.
The Community Safety Partnership wants to ensure students enjoy a safe and trouble-free post-results celebration.
Young adults are being reminded of the harmful effects of drink including alcoholic poisoning, hangovers, and reckless or anti-social behaviour.

Top Tips:
If you’re planning on drinking, think ahead:
• Most importantly – remember you don’t have to be drunk to have a good time. Set yourself a sensible limit and stick to it.
• Try and eat a meal before drinking and drink plenty of water – alcohol is dehydrating.
• Buying in rounds can make you drink more than you want – try to drink more slowly and skip rounds.
• Choose your drink – modern low alcohol drinks are much more palatable, be wary of extra strong brews – most are twice as strong as ordinary beers.
• The reason you feel rough after heavy drinking is largely due to dehydration and the effects of breakdown products of alcohol still in your system. Remember, alcohol is essentially toxic.

Stay safe in Water:
WATER may look safe, but it can be dangerous and going into cold water can cause shock and hypothermia which cause swimming accidents.
Swimmers need to think about the following points when considering entering the water:

• Very cold temperatures
• Hidden currents
• Very deep water, which can be difficult to estimate.
• Hidden and submerged hazards such as shopping trolleys, glass etc
• Steep and slippery embankments, which can cause difficulties in leaving the water
• Water pollution which can cause sickness
• Presence of lifeguards.

Carmarthenshire County Council executive board member for Community Safety Cllr Pam Palmer said: “We want young people to enjoy themselves celebrating their exam results after all their hard work – but we want them to do so safely and without causing trouble.
“I would urge them to take note of the advice on drinking sensibly and on staying safe.”
