New £8.8million unit for Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen

A new £8.8million state-of-the-art Clinical Decisions Unit (CDU) has opened its doors at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen.
The new unit brings together medical and surgical assessment, as well as Community Resource Teams, pharmacy and hospital multidisciplinary teams, 24 hours a day.
It provides assessment and treatment for patients, improving admissions into the hospital and supporting other frontline services such as the Emergency Department and GPs.
Patients are referred to CDU by a doctor - either their GP or a doctor in the A&E department -who has made an assessment of their condition and who thinks that the CDU is the best place to investigate the problem further.
Patients can be referred to the CDU with a wide range of medical or surgical conditions.
Once a patient arrives in the CDU, medical investigations will take place and the decision is taken whether to admit the patient to hospital for treatment, refer to an alternative health or social care provider or discharge the patient for treatment at home or in the community.
Hywel Dda Health Board Chief Executive Trevor Purt said: “We are delighted to provide this service for patients in Carmarthenshire and beyond. The CDU is a key component in improving access top unscheduled care by increasing capacity at the decision making area of Glangwili Hospital. It will also support our staff to deliver a quality service, enhancing the patient environment and facilities for staff.”
The CDU at Glangwili is divided into multiple areas of care to best meet patients’ needs.
Patients who are well enough to be treated in the CDU and do not need to be admitted to hospital, will benefit from an area that contains ten medical treatment chairs rather than beds.
The CDU also benefits from 13 state of the art motorised trolleys and one bariatric trolley. Glangwili Hospital has many inclines and these motorised trolleys will ensure porters are able to transfer patients much more easily around the hospital.
The single bed areas provide 10 single rooms with en-suite facilities which include wet shower room and toilet.
Chairman Chris Martin said: “Patients requiring unscheduled assessments will now have access to multidisciplinary teams within one unit and this will help ensure those patients receive the right care in the right place across both health and social care, helping to reduce unnecessary admission to hospital.
The health board has worked hard to make sure the CDU is fit for the future and incorporates wireless networking throughout with the aim to become paper free in the future.
