Boost for Carmarthenshire Council's housing stock
Forty five per cent of Carmarthenshire County Council’s housing stock has achieved the Carmarthenshire Homes Standard, years before the end of the authority’s ambitious £203million improvement programme.
By 2015, all of the council’s homes will achieve the standard, with many of the work programmes – including loft and cavity insulation - already completed ahead of schedule.
The Carmarthenshire Homes Standard was launched in 2005 as a 10-year programme to improve the council’s 9,000 homes, as well as improving tenants’ communities and general health and wellbeing.
Last year alone, £26million was invested with 959 new kitchens and 853 new bathrooms installed; 871 efficient heating systems; 575 hard wired smoke detectors and 878 carbon monoxide detectors.
Executive Board Member for Housing, Cllr Tegwen Devichand, said: “The Carmarthenshire Homes Standard has made a significant improvement – not only to the standard of our tenants’ homes but also to their quality of life. Perhaps the most significant improvement in the eyes of our tenants is that their homes are more energy efficient – they are easier to heat and keep warm, which has an impact on their bills and also their health.”
Wider benefits of the CHS include increased training and employment opportunities in the local construction industry.
As well as providing a much-needed boost and stability to construction companies, over 150 apprentices have also benefitted from the council’s investment programme.
The CHS programme remains one of the council’s key targets, with a target to achieve the quality standard in 61 per cent of homes during 2012/13.
