Carmarthenshire celebrates sustainability drive

Carmarthenshire is joining countries from all over Europe to celebrate European Sustainable Energy Week next week.
From Monday to Friday (June 18-22) has a programme of activities highlighting initiatives and projects under way aimed at reducing the county’s carbon footprint and energy consumption.
The West Wales European Centre, part of the Europe Direct EU information network, is working in partnership with Carmarthenshire County Council Sustainable Development Team to raise awareness of the county’s ongoing sustainable drive.
The council’s Sustainability Adviser Eurgain Powell said: “We are doing a huge amount of work to reduce our energy consumption. The measures we are putting in place will lead to financial savings, as well as reducing the authority’s energy use and carbon emissions.
“From energy monitors being installed in Carmarthenshire schools, energy-efficient lighting being fitted in all county council’s buildings, to leisure centres looking at re-using waste water, the county is committed to making all buildings more energy efficient, reducing resource use and becoming a sustainable county.”
All week, Carmarthenshire leisure centres will display information about the amount of water and energy saved so far as well as key projects under way to reduce their energy consumption further.
For example, last year, Llanelli Leisure Centre saved more than 20 tonnes of carbon - enough CO2 emissions to fill four Olympic swimming pools.
A competition will also be launched on Monday to find the most innovative idea to save energy in the Leisure centres.
Members of the public will have until Friday (June 22) to submit their ideas either in their local leisure centres or online at www.actifsigar.co.uk to be in with a chance of winning a free swim pass for a month and a rugby ball.
The week will culminate on Friday June 22, in Carmarthen with a Sustainable Energy Roadshow from 11am until 2pm with a wide range of information about renewable energy and energy efficiency tips for everyone. Many of these have been supported by European funding and I want to thank the staff at the West Wales European Centre for their commitment and support. 'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career. "Everyone in the area is hugely proud of her achievements in athletics to date," said Phil. "But we also want to see her go on and do bigger and better things.
