The headmaster’s report on this latest Welsh Premier League defeat for Carmarthen Town will read – ‘showing good improvement, but must do better’.
Followers of the Welsh Premier League will appreciate that there isn’t a great deal between the teams at the top and the bottom of a 12-team championship.
Certainly, there wasn’t much difference between success and failure between Carmarthen, anchored to the bottom of the table, and Bala Town, currently in fifth spot.
At Richmond Park, on Saturday, the difference was a goal in the 66th minute from Bala central defender Mike Byron.
There were plenty of signs of encouragement for Carmarthen Town.
“I thought we were competitive throughout,” said manager Tomi Morgan.
“We battled right to the very end. We had a few chances, but we failed to take our opportunities. I saw enough today to suggest that we can climb off the bottom of the table.”
Tim Hicks was slotted into central defence and once again demonstrated his class as Carmarthen’s star ‘play anywhere’ player.
There were good battling performances from Nicky Palmer (even if he does run the risk of collecting a few cards along the way), Geraint Passmore and Nick Harrhy.
Of concern to manager Morgan, however, will be the form up front of striker Jack Christopher.
Christopher has yet to repay the faith shown in him by manager Morgan, who signed him from Haverfordwest in the summer.
Christopher needs to find that extra yard of pace, be more powerful in holding the ball up and more accurate in off-loading to his team-mates.
Carmarthen’s best chance in the first half came when Steffan Williams made a break down the right and crossed to Nicky Palmer, who saw his shot saved by the Bala goalkeeper.
Early in the second-half Carmarthen goalkeeper Mike Lewis kept Town in the game by saving with his feet when Lee Hunt appeared to have the goal at his mercy.
The only goal of the game came shortly after when Carmarthen failed to deal with a corner and the ball fell to Mike Byron, who hammered the ball home with some style.
To their credit, Carmarthen continued to battle on. Jack Christopher had a shot on target and Hicks put a controversial free kick over the bar.

Former Gower MP Gareth Wardell was the guest speaker at the weekly meeting of Llanelli Rotary Club held at the Stradey Park Hotel. Mr Wardell's Parliamentary term was largely in opposition to Margaret Thatcher's Conservative Government. 'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career. "Everyone in the area is hugely proud of her achievements in athletics to date," said Phil. "But we also want to see her go on and do bigger and better things. "Together with some friends, I am helping find ways of generating much-needed sponsorship cash for Lauryn.
