TV shoot delight for Aberystwyth students



A total of 10 talented film and TV students from Aberystwyth University had the experience of working on a professional TV shoot on their doorstep, as Boomerang made use of the University’s new digital studio facilities for its new children’s TV show Sbridiri.
The final year students who will be scouting for media jobs in the coming months had already come into contact with the company through production research modules in the Department.
Marged Rees, said “The opportunity to have work experience in the industry was incredible. We were able see how a professional shoot operates and become part of the team. It was an experience that will help us a great deal in the future.”
Sbridiri is a brand new children’s art programme aimed at young children.
The stars of this show are Iwan John, who plays the character Twm Tisian, and his co-presenter Lisa Marged.
It was broadcast for the first time on S4C’s under it’s Cyw brand on Thursday, May 12.
This is the first studio-based series to be produced in Aberystwyth for over a decade and it was a golden opportunity to put the student’s skills to work as they shadowed sound, camera, production and post-production departments.
Huw Eurig Davies, chief executive of Boomerang+, was enthusiastic about the scheme: “It’s an excellent way of spotting the talent that’s coming through into the industry. We were very keen to work in Aberystwyth, and shooting the series in the studio at the film and TV department builds upon our successful partnership with the University.”
The development was also welcomed by Dr. Jamie Medhurst, Acting Head of the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies: “this works experience scheme allows our students to build upon their skills, in an environment that is totally professional yet familiar to them, preparing them well for the workplace. We look forward to developing further opportunities such as this with Boomerang and other companies."

The first programme of Sbridiri was transmitted at 8:05am on Thursday 12 May 2011. A repeat of the programme will be shown at 11:55am on Friday 20 May. It will also be shown on catch-up on http://cyw.s4c.co.uk.

'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career. "Everyone in the area is hugely proud of her achievements in athletics to date," said Phil. "But we also want to see her go on and do bigger and better things.
