Shaftesbury trip success for choir

Another ‘missionary’ expedition by Cor Meibion Llanelli (Llanelli Male Voice) has been a resounding success.
The choir journeyed to the Dorset hilltop town of Shaftesbury as part of a link which goes back 20 years.
“As one of the leading choirs in Wales we enjoy doing our bit to spread the Gospel of Welsh choral singing to parts of England,” smiled choir musical director Eifion Thomas.
“Over the years Shaftesbury has been a regular missionary trip for us and the connection is now so strong that there will be a busload of fans from Dorset attending our annual concert in Llanelli on July 16.
“Our Dorset concert was held at the Shaftesbury School and Sports College and was a sell-out event.
“We had a fabulous reception and it was something of a red letter day for us as it marked a concert debut for our new accompanist Sarah Thomas.
Concert organiser Susan Ballett explained the history of the link with Cor Meibion Llanelli: “They first came at the invitation of St James Church in the late 1980s and have managed to fit in return visits every three or four years ever since to the delight of everyone who hears them
“Shaftesbury School music lovers always enjoy their very special sound. Under the baton of Eifion Thomas, the choir never fails to raise the benchmark even higher.”
The choir’s programme included a mix of traditional Welsh items alongside songs from the shows and some Negro spirituals.
“It really was a varied programme with something for everyone. We thoroughly enjoy our visits to Shaftesbury and it is always great chance to meet up with Welsh ‘exiles’ who may be feeling that ‘hiraeth’ or longing for their homeland of Wales.”
