Carmarthenshire apprentice scheme wins praise
A Carmarthenshire apprentice scheme has been recognised as a leader in its field at a national award ceremony.
Despite missing out on the overall award, the Carmarthenshire Shared Apprentice scheme was singled out for praise at the National Training Awards overall winners’ ceremony in London in December.
The Shared Apprenticeship Scheme, which offers opportunities for young people to enter the construction sector in Carmarthenshire, had previously won the NTA’s Wales regional award in September.
The scheme is run by Carmarthenshire Construction Training Association Ltd (CCTAL), CITB-ConstructionSkills Wales, Coleg Sir Gar and Carmarthenshire County Council.
The judges comments read: “The judges concluded that this is an innovative approach to apprenticeships. While the success of the programme is clearly evidenced in the entry, the judges were pleased to see that the CCTAL approach is currently being evaluated as the future model for all apprenticeships in England and Wales.
“The potential national impact of the scheme, as well as its successes to date were seen by the judges as meriting even wider recognition.”
The Shared Apprenticeship Scheme, launched in 2007, offers construction apprentices the opportunity to undertake placements across a range of different businesses to give them a wider variety of experience in the construction and built environment sector.
It has been seen as an innovative scheme for some time, and has won other Welsh and UK awards previously.
Carmarthenshire Construction Training Association Ltd chairman Robert Williams said the achievements of the scheme are a testament to the unfaltering and unified commitment of its partners in providing the right environment for each one of the apprentices.
Carmarthenshire County Council spokesman Phil Lumley added: "With the drive for efficiencies and collaboration in public expenditure, it is a credit to all concerned that training can still be given the focused attention for the benefit of our future skilled personnel by parties from across the construction sector by taking an active part in this innovative shared programme."
