'Think Safe, Drink Safe' this Christmas
Festive revellers in Carmarthenshire are being urged to ‘Think Safe, Drink Safe’ this Christmas.
The Community Safety Partnership wants to ensure residents enjoy a safe and trouble-free bash.
Officers are urging people to drink sensibly this party season - not only to avoid a hangover on Christmas Day – but to make sure a night out doesn’t end with a trip to A&E or a night in the cells!
Police will be stepping up patrols over the Christmas period and visiting licensed premises with council licensing officers in a bid to clamp down on underage drinking and reduce anti-social behaviour and alcohol-related crime.
Community safety and neighbourhood policing officers will also be handing out free bottles of water in Llanelli, Carmarthen and Ammanford on Friday, December 17 and Saturday, December 18 to help keep people hydrated and combat the effects of alcohol.
Taxi marshals will again be based at Island Place in Llanelli and Blue Street in Carmarthen on key nights during the festive period to help revellers get home safely.
Community Safety Inspector Tony Ward said: “We want people to enjoy themselves, but we also want them to know their limits and to think about their own personal safety and the safety of others.”
Revellers are also being warned that anyone caught causing trouble in pubs and clubs over Christmas could find themselves banned under the BOBB (Behave or Be Banned) scheme. In total 180 licensed premises across the county have signed up and 98 people are currently banned.
Executive board member for community safety Councillor Pam Palmer said: “Violent and alcohol-related crime is one of the partnership’s main priorities and a number of initiatives are underway in the county which are proving to be very effective.
“Our aim is to raise awareness of alcohol-related problems and to ensure that people have a safe and trouble-free festive period.”
The Community Safety Partnership, which includes the council, police, fire service, local health board and a number of other agencies, was set up to make Carmarthenshire a safer place to live, work and visit.
Top Tips:
If you’re planning on drinking, think ahead:
• Most importantly – remember you don’t have to be drunk to have a good time. Set yourself a sensible limit and stick to it.
• Try and eat a meal before drinking and drink plenty of water – alcohol is dehydrating.
• Buying in rounds can make you drink more than you want – try to drink more slowly and skip rounds.
• Choose your drink – modern low alcohol drinks are much more palatable, be wary of extra strong brews – most are twice as strong as ordinary beers.
• The reason you feel rough after heavy drinking is largely due to dehydration and the effects of breakdown products of alcohol still in your system. Remember, alcohol is essentially toxic.
• And remember, never leave your drink unattended.
