Facelift for Llangadog Post Office
Llangadog Post Office is being given a facelift thanks to a grant from the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013.
The post office and newsagents in Church Street, Llangadog, has been given a Village Improvement Grant (VIG) of £8,538 towards the estimated £17,471 cost of the project to refurbish the shopfront in a traditional style.
The work will include replacing the aluminium windows and door with hardwood and re-rendering the property.
This grant has been made under the Village Enhancement Project, which has received funding of £940,049 through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007 – 2013, which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Agricultural fund for Rural Development.
The project aims to enhance the appearance of rural towns and villages and stimulate economic growth.
The VIG itself is aimed to enhance the branding of commercial properties in rural areas.
Project Development Officer Michael Morgan said: “Morgan’s Newsagent and Post Office is in a prominent location in the heart of Llangadog. The business is at the heart of the community on Llangadog.
“The building itself looks dated and is in need of enhancement in line with the conservation status of Llangadog.”
Win Morgan, who runs the business with her husband Richard, said: “We are hoping that the project will make a wonderful difference.
“We will be having a whole new shop frontage in the Georgian style. It will enhance our look and the community environment.”
Executive board member for regeneration and leisure Cllr Clive Scourfield said: “I’m pleased to see a Llangadog business taking advantage of a Village Improvement Grant to renovate the facade of the building.
“The work will enhance the look of Llangadog Post Office and fit in well with work carried out to improve other business premises in Llangadog.”
The Village Improvement Grant is open to sole traders, partnerships, private companies and community businesses that are based, or wish to be based, in Carmarthenshire’s rural villages and towns.
Priority is given to applications that work in partnership with neighbouring properties to develop envelope schemes in order that the scheme has a bigger environmental impact.
Applicants demonstrating a need for support can secure up to 50 per cent of the eligible project cost, up to a maximum grant of £15,000.
