Regeneration plans for Kidwelly's quayside
Major regeneration plans are afoot for Kidwelly’s historic quay.
A £180,000 scheme to revamp the estuary area and attract more visitors is underway.
Regeneration chiefs want to build on its ‘hidden gem’ status and enhance its mix of open space, superb estuary views, unique industrial heritage and wildlife habitats
A vision is being drawn up with exciting plans to create new paths and walkways, improve the car park and develop better signs.
Carmarthenshire County Council has joined forces with Kidwelly Town Council, Kidwelly Town Forum, and RSPB for the scheme, with funding from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Western Valleys Strategic Regeneration Area Programme, and the Valleys Regional Park.
The quay, and its connected lands along Kymer’s Canal, are seen as a little known treasure spot for visitors.
The aim is to regenerate the area and make the land around the estuary and along the canal more accessible.
Reports are being prepared and there are hopes that some information will be ready to present to the community at the town carnival on Saturday, July 10.
A detailed ecological habitat study is being conducted before planning permission for the works can be sought in the autumn.
Consultation will also be carried out with residents before the two year project gets underway.
The scheme has already won the support of the RSPB, because of the area’s potential for birdwatching.
The council’s Strategic Development Officer Phil Snaith said: “This is an exciting project which involves refreshing the quay area and attracting more visitors to this part of Kidwelly.
“We hope to develop new walkways and improve the signage. We are waiting the conclusion of reports before we can go out to consultation.”
The work is part of a major regeneration programme being driven forward across the county by the council and its partners.
Communities all over Carmarthenshire are reaping the rewards of huge investment.
Regeneration Executive Board Member cllr Clive Scourfield said: “I am delighted that so much proactive work is underway to improve our communities.
“Kidwelly is an attractive town which is situated on the estuary, and it is pleasing that this area of the town is to be regenerated.
“This is innovative work to support and develop our communities and we will continue to work closely with people, groups and partners to ensure the best results."
