Tai Chi classes for Pantyffynnon


Amman Valley residents are turning to the ancient art of Tai Chi as part of a healthy living project.
The Chinese martial art is being trialled in the community.
Organisers say the classes have proved a big hit, with people from across the area attending and enjoying the benefits.
It is the latest in a series of initiatives being spearheaded to encourage more people to take up exercise and improve their health and wellbeing.
It is aimed at people who do not have any exercise and those who are looking for company to keep fit.
The Communities First team in Pantyffynnon has teamed up with the Plodders for the scheme.
The group also take part in line dancing, gentle exercise and walking, in a bid to improve their health and wellbeing.
Regular classes are held and the next session will be at Ammanford Evangelical Church on July 6 from 2-3pm.
Communities First Development Worker Emma Martin-Jewell said: “We work very closely with the Plodders to develop new ideas or encourage volunteers to participate in different initiatives.
“Tai Chi is a gentle form of exercise that can be done standing up or sitting down. It helps to move the joints and has many health benefits.
“New members are welcome to join us for Tai Chi or on one of the many walks we organise throughout the year.”
Carmarthenshire County Council runs the Communities First programme.
The aim is to improve the living conditions and prospects for people in deprived wards of the county and ensure that funding is targeted at the poorest areas.
A host of events and educational activities are staged every year, along with specific regeneration programmes.
Regeneration Executive Board Member cllr Clive Scourfield said: “The Communities First team perform a vital role in the area and I am delighted that so many activities are available.
“I hope this group will encourage people to make improvements to their health whilst having fun at the same time.”

'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career.
