Tyre amnesty rolls in to Newcastle Emlyn

Carmarthenshire residents with unwanted tyres to get rid of are being urged to take them to Newcastle Emlyn on Wednesday (May 12).
A tyre amnesty is being held in the mart between 12pm and 6pm, organised by Tidy Towns, a Welsh Assembly Government-funded initiative which is delivered in partnership by Carmarthenshire County Council and Keep Wales Tidy.
Residents can take their unwanted tyres to dispose of free of charge instead of paying a fee.
It is hoped the amnesty will encourage householders to dispose of their waste responsibly and discourage fly-tipping which is not only a blight on the landscape, but costs local authorities millions of pounds every year to clean up and causes harm to wildlife and the environment.
Tidy Towns project officer Kelly Shefford said: “We have already held four other amnesties across the county and collected more than 3,000 tyres.
“This is the last chance for residents to dispose of any unwanted tyres for free. The aim is to encourage people to do the right thing and dispose of their waste in a responsible manner.”
Only 10 tyres (on or off the wheel rim) are permitted per household and proof of residency in Carmarthenshire is required such as a recent domestic utilities bill or valid driving licence.
Commercial, agricultural or trade vehicle tyres will not be accepted.
Householders are also reminded that tyres left outside of the times is classed as fly-tipping and they could be fined up to £50,000 or even get a prison sentence!
