New link between Trinity and China

A ground-breaking link is being set up between a Chinese university and the newest university in Wales, Trinity St David.
A powerful delegation from China Youth University for Political Science (CYUPS) has visited the University of Wales: Trinity St David to kick-start a programme which will focus on employability and entrepreneurship.
The Vice Chancellor of CYUPS Professor Xinqing Wang said the link between China and Wales would focus on student and staff exchanges.
He added it would build communication between two very different educational traditions to help create a new approach to higher education in both countries.
The link builds on earlier contacts between China and Wales. Last year, students from Beijing took part in a fact-finding tour of the Trinity campus in Carmarthen.
The new University of Wales, Trinity St David – a merger of Trinity University and Lampeter University – will take its first student admissions in September.
Professor Xinqing Wang led the Chinese delegation on their visit. They met the Vice Chancellor of UWTD Dr Medwin Hughes at two separate meetings held at the Lampeter campus and the Carmarthen campus.
The meeting at the Lampeter campus was mainly focussed on a British Council MA programme: China-UK Collaborative Partnerships in Employability and Entrepreneurship.
This programme is one of only nine to go ahead out of an original application list of 41.
An agreement has been signed by the Chinese and Welsh teams in order to give formal university level support to the newly-developed programme and existing partnerships.
CYUPS will send two staff to the UWTD to take part in the design of the structure and modules of the MA programme.
China Youth University for Political Science plays a leading role in Chinese higher education and has a close relationship with the Training Centre of KAB (Knowing about Business),whose training network includes more than 500 top universities in China.
The next step in the link will see the Vice Chancellor of UWTD Dr Medwin Hughes lead a seven-strong delegation to attend the annual conference of the KAB China Training Centre.
Dr Hughes will give a speech on ‘Employability and Entrepreneurship in the UK and UWTD’.
The meeting between the Welsh and Chinese teams at the Carmarthen campus was focussed on establishing short term training programmes for youth leaders or senior managers in political, social, cultural, economical organisations and companies.
The aim is to boost cross cultural awareness and international employability and entrepreneurship.
Work-based MA and PhD programmes were discussed in the meeting, together with an International Foundation Programme preparing for a MA and PhD programme.
It is hoped to sign an agreement when the Welsh delegation visits China in April.
The foundation programme at Trinity St David will focus on Chinese language and cultural training; while the programme at the Chinese campus will focus on English, comparing Chinese culture with that of the west, and study skills and research methodology.
