Forum held at Parc y Scarlets
A forum has been held in Carmarthenshire to raise awareness of the services which help vulnerable people maintain independence in their own homes.
The event was put on by the Welsh Assembly Government funded Supporting People programme, which is led locally by Carmarthenshire County Council.
It was held at Llanelli’s Parc Y Scarlets and was the fifth of its kind.
Speakers included Cllr Hugh Evans, the council’s Supporting People Champion; Ruth Evans, Supporting People Principal Officer; Peter Llewellyn, Head of Partnership and Integrated Commissioning; Phil Tipton, Supporting People Development Officer for Merthyr County Borough Council; and Sharon Court, Service Manager at Trothwy Cyf and Chair of the Supporting People Providers Forum.
It was aimed at raising the profile of the Supporting People programme and of the services that it funds.
It also gave people the opportunity to voice their opinions on gaps in services and to talk about priorities for the future delivery and development of services.
Delegates also discussed the possibility of implementing a central referral system in Carmarthenshire, feedback from which will be channelled through the Supporting People Planning Group, chaired by Bruce McLernon (Director of Social Care, Health and Housing).
Almost 100 people attended the event, including senior officers from across the range of statutory services, representatives of Supporting People provider organisations, and service users from various housing related support projects across Carmarthenshire.
Ruth Evans, Carmarthenshire’s Supporting People Principal Officer, said: “It was a great opportunity to hear everyone’s views and for people working and living in supported housing to get to know each other better.”
Cllr Evans, Supporting People Champion, added: “I was pleased to see how many people, including Supporting People providers and service users, attended the event. It is testament of the importance of the Supporting People Programme that so many people wanted to attend.
“It was a very successful and informative event all about how we can work together to help people to stay in their own homes.”
