They are now busy getting ready for their annual Christmas concert will be on Saturday, December 16, at Ffwrnes Theatre.
The international broadcast and performance voices of Llanelli’s Hywel Girls’ Choir & Hywel Boy Singers and the boutique chorale Angelicus Celtis, all under the baton of their legendary conductor John Hywel Williams, are preparing for a busy run up to Christmas.
The Hywel Choirs will kick-off the Christmas season with sessions in the recording studios as they prepare for forthcoming Album launches before taking part in the special Christmas edition of S4C’s flagship Dechrau Canu Dechrau Canmol. The choristers will then start a tour of Christmas performances commencing in St. Mary’s Church Swansea in aid of Tenovus Cancer Care (30 November), before joining forces with the symphonic Sounds of the British Sinfonietta at Llanelli’s Ffwrnes Theatre (2 December) and hosting a 250-voice Great Christmas Festival broadcast performance from Swansea’s Brangwyn Hall (10 December) with an end of year performance at Covent Garden, London (23 December).
This will end another historic year for the Hywel Girls’ Choir & Hywel Boy Singers which has seen them perform at prestigious concert venues across the country and enjoy television and radio broadcasts reaching tens of millions in the UK and abroad.
In the last 12 months alone, the choristers have enjoyed performances at The House of Lords, St. David’s Cathedral, Morriston Tabernacle Chapel, Covent Garden, Birmingham Hippodrome, Swansea’ Brangwyn Hall and various performances with their resident orchestra the British Sinfonietta Symphony Orchestra including a fun Last Night of the Proms to name but a few.
However, their busy 2017 concert schedule is eclipsed by an incredible broadcast year on television and radio. This year alone, television broadcasts of the choristers have reached over 20 million viewers and include appearances on BBC, ITV, S4C, Channel 4 and international television channels with highlights including a special feature on BBC Songs of Praise, ITV Britain’s Got Talent Semi-Finalists and memorable filming in locations including The London Palladium, London’s iconic Elstree Studios, Llansteffan Castle, Manorbier Castle while national and regional radio broadcasts have reached over 7 million listeners and online videos of the choristers have recently past 11 million viewers.
Their exciting year of song also meant the choristers performed and met a wealth of celebrities during the year.
“I was so excited to meet and chat with Ant and Dec”, said 14-year old chorister Cari Samuel from Bynea, Llanelli while 3-year old Rebecca Lewis of Burry Port said “Simon Cowell was so nice to meet and very complimentary of our singing behind the scenes.”
“It has been an exciting year for us all”, said conductor John Hywel Williams. “We are excited at the wonderful experiences and opportunities which we have been able to give the choristers in singing, personal development and building experiences and memories to last a lifetime!”
“During the year, we’ve been flooded with thousands of messages from viewers and listeners from every continent which is both exciting and humbling.”
However, the choir and its conductor should be no stranger to international media exposure having clocked up over 200 television broadcasts reaching over 120 countries around the world and 25 international concert tours including pioneering adventures as the first British choir to travel behind the communist iron curtainin the early 1950s.
While aspiring to be angels on stage, the choristers also aspired to be angels within their community this year. As Ambassadors to Cerebra, they have enjoyed fundraising through collections and sponsored mountain climbs and provide direct Play & Sing sessions for Cerebra’s children with brain conditions. Other charities supported include the Salvation Army, local church communities, cancer treatments such as Save Nicola and Teenage Cancer Trust, supporting our brave veterans, in particular the Chelsea Pensioners through performances at the Royal Hospital Chelsea and collecting gifts for them. The choristers also enjoyed collecting and distributing hundreds of Christmas presents to those in need across its community and hundreds of Easter Eggs to nurses and emergency service personnel as their simple way of saying thank you for being there for us all.
2018 is already looking to be a busy year for the choristers. Highlights include a number of albums planned to be recorded, three performances with their resident orchestra the British Sinfonietta and hosting a prestigious WW1 Remembrance Broadcast Performance at Coventy’s famous Cathedral. 2018 will also celebrate the incredible 70th anniversary of the Hywel Girls’ Choir and see the choir’s conductor John Hywel become the world’s longest serving choral conductor.
Tickets are now available for a major concert to be staged at Ffwrnes Theatre, Llanelli on Saturday, May 19, 2018 (7pm).
An array of stars will perform a very special evening of song in celebration of Llanelli Rotary Club marking its landmark Centenary Year.
Shan Cothi, one of the country’s most popular sopranos, will be sharing the stage with two great Welsh international choral ambassadors - Côr Meibion Llanelli, under the baton of conductor D Eifion Thomas, and the Hywel Girls’ Choir and Hywel Boy Singers, under the baton of conductor John Hywel Williams.
Joining them will be the delightful sounds of Cor Ysgol Goffa, an ensemble from Ysgol Y Strade under the baton of Catrin Hughes and the Lewis- Meredith Sisters - Calley, Sarah and Steffi.
The event has two aims –
  • To help commemorate the centenary of Llanelli Rotary Club
  • To raise funds for the Green Light Postrate Cancer Machine at Prince Philip Hospital.
The compere will be Robert Lloyd.
