Gwendraeth Valley young driver wins £250 cash prize


A young driver from the Gwendraeth Valley has not only improved his driving skills but has been lucky enough to win a £250 cash prize.
Joshua Rees, aged 17, from Penygroes, recently completed a Pass Plus Cymru course.
The scheme helps young people aged 17 to 25 who have recently passed their test to improve skills and gain extra experience.
Usually costing around £160, it is significantly discounted to £20, with the balance made up by the council’s road safety unit, thanks to funding from Welsh Government.
Not only did Josh build his confidence in the driving seat, but he was also the winner of the Pass Plus Cymru quarterly prize draw.
The £250 cheque from Road Safety Wales was presented to Josh by the council’s Executive Board Member for Transport Cllr Hazel Evans.
Josh said he would be putting the money towards a car.
Speaking about the course, he said: “I found it very beneficial, especially the experience of driving on the motorway and at night. I found the information about stopping distances really useful too.”
Cllr Evans said: “This is an excellent scheme that helps young people gain valuable extra experience and positive motoring skills that would otherwise take a long time to acquire. Well done Josh for taking part and for winning the prize draw.”
Future Pass Plus Cymru courses are being held at Carmarthen Fire Station on Monday, February 22 and Monday, April 11; Llanelli Fire Station on Monday, March 14 and Ammanford Fire Station on May 9.

'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career.
