Meanwhile, concert promoter Cerith Owens has a musical treat in store later this year when he stages the Loud Applause Annual Concert – ‘Night With the Stars’ - at Ffwrnes Theatre, Llanelli, on November 7.
The concert will feature the dazzling trio of violinists The Singhs and the Morriston Orpheus Choir.
The Orpheus is one of the best known choirs in Wales.
The Choir was formed on April 23, 1935, by Ivor E. Sims and in its early days concentrated primarily on competitions and local concerts.
In 1937, the Choir achieved its first success at the Royal National Eisteddfod in Machynlleth, going on to win at the National on six further occasions.
The choir does not presently sing in competitions, preferring to concentrate on concert performances.
Over the years, successive Musical Directors have developed and broadened the repertoire. Variety is now the hallmark of the Choir's performances which include arrangements by Alwyn Humphreys MBE, Musical Director from 1979 to January 2005 and now the Choir's Conductor Emeritus.
The Choir enjoys an international reputation as a leading exponent of male choral singing. Within the United Kingdom the Choir is in constant demand with around 25 engagements a year, including concerts, TV and after-dinner performances.
The Choir regularly undertakes concert tours overseas.
Highlights of previous overseas tours have included four appearances at British Military Tattoos and Concerts in the former West Berlin, participating at the International Choral Festivals in Nancy, France, and Toronto in Canada, representing Wales at Expo '92 in Seville, Spain, and becoming in 1996, the first British choir to perform at the International Choral Festival in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
The Choir features regularly on TV. It has produced over 50 recordings and feature in more than 100 compilation albums. Successful ventures into the "pop" world have included recordings with the Welsh group, The Alarm and most recently Howard Jones.
In 2005 the Choir appointed its first female Musical Director Sian Pearce to replace Alwyn Humphreys who had decided to retire after serving the Choir since 1979. Sian left the Choir in 2007 and Joy Amman Davies who in 2004 had been made a Life Member of the Choir in recognition of her outstanding contribution and commitment as accompanist, was appointed Musical Director.
The Signhs are three violinists of Welsh – Indian heritage come together as a family to play classics that they love and music they’ve created based on their heritage and experiences. All three violinists are international prize winners and as individuals have performed in all corners of the globe. Rakhi was the leader of the Barbirolli Quartet and is now is assistant leader for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and guest leads the CBSO. Davinder Singh is a member of Graffiti string quartet and Simran Singh is a member of the young prize winning Zelkova quartet. Between all three they have studied at the RNCM, RAM, Guildhall and Lizst Academy in Budapest and Tanglewood Institute USA. As well as completing intensive classical training they all believe music should have no boundaries and as a result decided to create an evening performing music that speaks directly from, and to the heart. Having both studied in Budapest, violinist Davinder and his mother Dorothy run the Kodaly Society of Wales which they founded two years ago to promote music education in Wales.
As well as their classical repertoire they present new pieces created by Rakhi and Simmy based on the folk music of Wales, Hungary, Bulgaria and India. They are also in the process of commissioning pieces from Ian Stephens and Joe Cutler. Expect something old and something new!
Their programme consists of solos, duos and trios for violins – with piano accompaniment if a piano is available – if there is no piano they may perform with either a double bass, accordion and/or percussion.
Repertoire ranges from Renaissance airs and marches – classical and romantic classics and compositions by Rakhi and Simmy Singh based on Welsh, Hungarian, Bulgarian and Indian folk songs. They are also in the process of commissioning pieces from composers Ian Stephens and Joe Cutler.
The Loud Applause Night With the Stars will also feature all the Loud Applause Rising Stars -soloists: Samuel Morris, Jordan Williams, Johnny Mansel-Lewis, Nia Rees, Angharad Elise-Thomas, Keely Morgan, Daniella Difede, Sophie Maliphant and instrumentalists Cai Charles (guitar), Rhodri Thomas (trombone), Ffion Elin Thomas (harp)
