Baroness Gillian Shepard on fact-finding mission with South Wales Rotary Clubs

Baroness Gillian Shepard (deputy chair of the Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission) attended the Rotary Club in Cardiff to hear from Rotary members from all over South Wales about their work with social mobility
The venue was Whitchurch (Cardiff) Golf Club, Pantmawr Road, Cardiff.
Baroness Shepard spent the afternoon with Rotary Club members from across Rotary's District 1150 South Wales area to hear about their continued work and support within their local communities. There was a focus around what the clubs are doing to reduce child poverty and improve social mobility, which is timely, as child poverty and social mobility is rising up the agenda again.

Background:
The Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission (the Commission) is an advisory non-departmental public body established by the Child Poverty Act 2010 as amended by the Welfare Reform Act 2012. The Commission became fully operational in January 2013.
The role of the Commission is to:
  • Monitor the Government’s progress in improving social mobility and reducing child poverty in the United Kingdom.
  • Monitor the implementation of the UK, Scottish and Welsh child poverty strategies.
  • Provide independent published advice to Ministers at their request, including about the measurement of socio-economic disadvantage, social mobility and child poverty.
  • Challenge non-government institutions, such as higher education, business and others, to improve their performance on social mobility.
The Commission’s Board is made up of 10 Commissioners:
Alan Milburn (chair);
Baroness Gillian Shephard (deputy chair);
Douglas Hamilton, Director of the RS Macdonald Charitable Trust;
Tom Attwood, Chairman of HG Capital Group and Chairman of Attwood Academies Ltd
Anne Marie Carrie, Chief Executive of Kensington and Chelsea Education Ltd;
Paul Cleal, Africa Business Group Leader at Price Waterhouse Coopers;
Paul Gregg, Professor of Economic and Social Policy, University of Bath;
Christian Guy, Director of Centre for Social Justice;
David Johnston, Chief Executive of the Social Mobility Foundation; and
Catriona Williams, Chief Executive of Children in Wales.

"There were 17 clubs represented at today's meeting, said Maggie Hughes, District 1150 Assistant Governor Area 6.
"The Baroness was extremely impressed with everything she heard."
The clubs gave presentations on Young Carers, Community Gardens and Homestart projects among many other activities carried out by Rotary in South Wales.
