The latest 'On Song' column from the Llanelli Star

The latest 'On Song' column (about the choral scene in and around Llanelli) from the Llanelli Star -

It is a busy Christmas for Cerith Owens, the director of Llaneli-based Loud Applause productions.
He’s getting ready for the first Loud Applause Christmas Concert, which is being staged at Greenfield Chapel, Llanelli, this Saturday, November 29.
Cerith explained: “It is always a rare privilege to be able to a debut a brand new choir, especially an exciting youth choir from the area and Loud Applause has that honour in its inaugural Christmas Concert at Greenfield Baptist Church.
“Cor Ieuenctid Llwyth Y Llan Youth Choir from Llangennech formed only a few months ago but already has 54 members. The choir are under the baton of Lewis Richards who has had numerous successes with his Llangennech Primary School Choir.
“He took on the baton to form the choir for members between the ages of 10 and 16 to perform in the medium of Welsh, English and other languages.
“At the moment the choir are mainly members of past pupils of Llangennech School but the door is open to anyone who would like to join.”
In the concert, Cor Ieuenctid Llwyth Y Llan Youth Choir will perform favourites such as Joyful Joyful, Karl Jenkins’ Adiemus and Byd Yn Un (World in Union).
They will be joined by mighty sound of the combined Burry Port and Mynydd Mawr Male Choirs, the very talented young Burry Port trombonists Rhodri Thomas, well known organist Andrew Pike, members of Loud Applause Rising Stars, host Huw Tregelles Williams – and a few surprises!
The Loud Applause Rising Stars performing will be Angharad Elise Thomas, Keely Morgan, Nia Rees, Sophie Maliphant and Jordan Williams, who all made such an impression in the Loud Applause sell out concert ‘Night With the Stars’ at Ffwrnes Theatre earlier this month.
One of the most popular Rising Stars, Jordan Williams, has had an exceptionally busy period over the last six months, said Mr Owens.
He added: “Jordan has been highly praised for his solo performances. Jordan’s appearances have included the Civic Service of Llanelli Town Mayor at at Capel Als, the annual concert of Swansea Male Choir, the Llanelli Rotary Club World War I Centenary Concert at Greenfield Chapel, at the Night With the Stars especially with his duet of Robat Arwyn’s Benedictus with Johnny Mansel Lewis and very recently an outstanding performance at the Brangwyn Hall in the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance where he performed alongside the Llanelli Choral Society.”
“Jordan has an exciting future ahead of him. He is in demand as a soloists, he works hard, listens to advice and embraces opportunities. We at Loud Applause are very proud of his continued achievements and proud of the achievements of all our Rising Stars.”
The Loud Applause Christmas Concert is at Greenfield Baptist Church on Saturday 29th November at 7pm, tickets available from Cadno Music Shop, Vaughan Street 01554 771772.

The globe-trotting choristers of Côr Meibion Llanelli will be returning home today after their visit to the musical city of Salzburg in Austria.
The birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was the destination for a musical journey with a Christmas theme.
The choir members performed at the renowned Salzburg Cathedral and also sang at nearby Oberndorf, the place where Stille Nacht, Silent Night, was written.
They also took in a trip to some of the key locations of The Sound of Music film.
“All in all, a very memorable trip and one of the highlights of this our 50th anniversary year,” said choir chairman Mel Harries.
“It is yet another great example of why it pays to be a member of a choir with a great tradition of male voice singing like Côr Meibion Llanelli. You get the chance to perform in world famous locations and make friends the world over.
“There is a warm welcome for new members to attend our weekly rehearsal sessions at Furnace Community Hall at 7pm on Mondays and Thursdays.”

Further to their recent Remembrance performance at the Brangwyn Hall Swansea, the Llanelli Choral Society will next be heard at the Christmas Fantasia on 6 December at Y Ffwrnes.

The Hywel Girls’ Choir & Hywel Boy Singers’ spectacular run up to Christmas continues. Further to their exciting royal performance at the Wales Festival of Remembrance, the choir will appear at the Royal Albert Hall London on the 27 November as part of a celebrity line up for the Salvation Army's Celebrity International Christmas Gala.
The Hywel Choir’s big Christmas show, The Christmas Fantasia will take place at Y Ffwrnes on 6 December which will see 250 musicians and singers unite from the British Sinfonietta Orchestra, Hywel Choir, Llanelli Choral Society, Morriston RFC Male Choir, Adele O’Neill, Huw Tregelles Williams – all under the baton of John Hywel Williams.
