Join the hunt for the ‘Mochyn Gwyllt’ at Pembrokeshire Antiques Fair

Towy Antiques Fairs are delighted to be returning to Picton Castle in 2014 for two, two-day antiques fairs on the weekends of the 7th and 8th of June, and the 13th and 14th of September.
Held within the magical staterooms and grounds of the region’s finest stately home ‘The Pembrokeshire Antiques Fair’ is an opportunity to view a wide range of antiques while meandering through this beautiful castle and its grounds.
High quality exhibitors synonymous with Towy’s well established Carmarthen Showground Fairs will be found at both the events at Picton Castle with dealers specialising in Welsh furniture and ceramics, as well as textiles, jewellery, silver, maps and prints and much more.
Amongst some of the most desirable items on sale will be a collection of Ewenny Pottery. Tony and Nikki Chadwick have been fans of Wales’ oldest working pottery since buying their first pieces – two elusive pottery pigs, at one of Towy’s Antiques Fairs in Carmarthen back in 2009.
Delighted with their purchases they began to carry out research in books and through contacts in the village of Ewenny near Bridgend. Over the next five years they delighted in uncovering the rich history of the various potteries, their arts and craftsmen and their potters.
The hunt gained momentum with finds from candlesticks, jugs, vases and tankards to pigs, cats, dogs and tygs (multi-handled cups.)
Speaking ahead of the Pembrokeshire Antiques Fair Tony said: “We delighted in the diversity of the pieces we sought out, the rich colours of the glazes and the connection to the skill of craftsmen working in the late 19th and early 20th century. We also enjoyed our meetings with dealers, experts and collectors who were generous with their time and knowledge.”
Before they knew it the Chadwicks had built up a serious private collection of old Ewenny (pre 1920), a significant part of which was loaned to Swansea Museum for an exhibition in 2013.
2013 saw a change in personal circumstances and Nikki’s retirement from her full time career due to ill health and the time was right to find a new outlet for the couple’s passion for an eclectic mix of antiques. Trading as ‘Mitchwick Memorabilia’ Tony and Nikki will be at the ‘Pembrokeshire Antiques Fair’ looking to downsize their amazing collection and allow others to take part in the hunt for the mochyn gwyllt (wild pig)!
The Pembrokeshire Antiques Fair takes place over the weekends of the 7th and 8th of June and the 13th and 14th of September and will be open from 10.30am to 5.00pm each day. Admission is £4.00 including entry to Picton Castle and Gardens.
