Meet robots, daleks, drones and people doing strange things with electricity

It's your chance to ‘Meet robots, daleks, drones and people doing strange things with electricity!’
The Machynlleth Mini Maker Faire is at the Centre for Alternative Technology, Machynlleth, September 28.
Machynlleth Mini Maker Faire is the only Maker Faire in Wales.
It brings together a unique programme of Makers, inventors, creative technologists and people doing strange things with electricity to the heart of rural Wales and offers us the opportunity to meet some unique electronic characters such as:
  • Dalek Doris and her friend K9.
  • Agnes Roboknit a Humanoid Knitting Robot
  • The Infamous Biting Machine
  • The cute Mofo humanoid
  • Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (SUAS), often referred to as 'Drones'
Local Scientist Stephen Fearne presents his project Interactive Robotic Entertainment. He invites you to meet Dalek Doris and her friend K9. These full size robots walk and talk and interact with you, have you ever been this close to a Dalek without being Exterminated!!
Stephen Fearne says “I have been a Dr Who fan for many years and have always loved the Daleks. Therefore, I have decided to have my own Dalek machine. Dalek Doris is a home made dalek replica based on the new series of DR WHO, Dalek Doris is a hybrid Dalek incorporating the NSD (New Seasons Dalek) and the classic Dalek.”

Born in Lyon, France, Artist Paul Granjon moved to the UK in 1995 and now teaches part-time on the BA Fine-Art course in Cardiff School of Art and Design. Initially working with video, he has since1999 developed and shown internationally live performances and exhibitions with hand-made robots.
He mostly creates self-made machines, words and actions that comment on current technological developments and their effects on humans.
An increased awareness of the challenges facing the planet and its inhabitants are now shifting the focus of his practice. He aims for a more effective impact on society and intends to contribute with his art and creative technology expertise to the exploration of alternative futures and to the dissemination of possible solutions.
Paul Granjon says “I am interested in the co-evolution of humans and machines, imagining solutions for alternative futures and minimising human impact on the planet's resources. I build robots and other machines for shows in performances, galleries and festivals. I also create temporary factories and other events where people can join in making, thinking, and playing.”

AGNES (Roboknit) by Scientist Andy Noyes is a life-sized humanoid knitting robot. She can knit by hand in a way very similar to a person, using a knitting loom (an alternative way of knitting to using knitting-needles) and is capable of making woolly hats, scarves, and other items. She took over a year to build and is made from many commonly available parts including electric motors recycled from printers and CD drives.
Created by Andy Noyes, she uses a loom to knit, as "using traditional knitting needles requires a much higher level of dexterity." He explains, "The most challenging part was getting her to make repeated small and accurate moves so she can knit without making mistakes. This is harder than it sounds as I wanted her to look and more like a human. If I simply wanted to build a machine to knit there are much easier ways of doing it!"
"People have responded very well to Agnes" Andy says. "At the UK Maker Faire many people told me she was their favourite exhibit there," although "some people also find her a little creepy, which I think is good and shows I've succeeded in giving her human-like qualities."
So far Agnes has created around a dozen scarves, each one taking around 4-5 hours to knit. She even has her own Facebook page!

About Maker Faire: Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth—a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement. It’s a place where people show what they are making, and share what they are learning.

Makers range from tech enthusiasts to crafters to homesteaders to scientists to garage tinkerers. They are of all ages and backgrounds. The aim of Maker Faire is to entertain, inform, connect and grow this community.
The original Maker Faire event was held in San Mateo, CA and in 2013 celebrated its eighth annual show with some 900 makers and 120,000 people in attendance. World Maker Faire New York, the other flagship event, has grown in three years to 500+ makers and 55,000 attendees. Detroit, Kansas City, Newcastle (UK),Rome, and Tokyo are the home of “featured” 2013 Maker Faires (200+ makers), and community-driven, independently organized Mini Maker Faires are now being produced around the world including right here in MACHYNLLETH.

About MAKE Magazine: MAKE is the first magazine devoted entirely to Do-It-Yourself (DIY) technology projects. MAKE unites, inspires, informs, and entertains a growing community of resourceful people who undertake amazing projects in their backyards, basements, and garages. MAKE celebrates your right to tweak, hack, and bend any technology to your will.

Machynlleth Mini Maker Faire will be a showcase of DIY TECHNOLOGY in the countryside that follows the Maker Faire model of celebrating do-it-yourself creativity and tinkering.
“Make, create, craft, recycle, build, think, play and be inspired by celebrating arts, crafts, engineering, food, music, science and technology.”
Featuring both established and emerging local, national and international “makers,” Machynlleth Mini Maker Faire is a family-friendly celebration featuring Art, 3Dprinting, RaspberryPis, Daleks, Opensource, Music, Sound, Robots, Animation, Space, Drones, Restartparties, Electricity, Sequencers, Kiteballet, Environmentalism, Handcrankedbackpacks, Selfsufficiency, Engineering, Craft, Science, Education, Fixers, Sustainable, Technology, Health, Upcycling and Energy.
