The latest 'Shop Elli' column from the Llanelli Star - 

The weather may have turned, but while the scorching sunshine lasted it provided a welcome trade boost at the St Elli Shopping Centre.
St Elli Shopping Centre manager Andrew Stephens said: “The lovely weather had everyone smiling. Customers enjoyed it and the shops were delighted with business.
“Peacocks, New Look and Argos reported strong dales, with brisk trade in summer clothes, fans, paddling pools and garden furniture. Sports Direct were also been pleased with sales of sports items.
“Everyone seemed to be getting the sporting bug following the successes of Andy Murray in the tennis and Chris Froome in the cycling!”

Amanda Rothwell has been manager of the Argos store in the St Elli Shopping Centre for four years. Amanda, 49, has worked for Argos for 26 years. She has worked at all the Swansea stores and other Argos outlets throughout the country. Amanda chuckled: “I have to admit to being a Swansea Jack, but I love it here in Llanelli. Argos is a very good company for work for. We are a small team here in the St Elli Shopping Centre as we have out-of-town retail at Parc Pemberton, but the staff here are great and they have an excellent rapport with the customers. It’s great in that we have our regular customers who come back time and time again. In terms of what we sell, toys and anything to do with children are always very popular in Llanelli town centre. I like the centre itself because it has a bit of everything. I particularly like the fact it has a traditional market attached to the centre.
“We like to get involved in different things at this store and last weekend we all dressed up to raise money for Alzheimer’s. We have the new Argos catalogue which has just been published, which is very exciting news for us. And we have a new ‘Tell Argos’ promotion which has just started and which gives customers the chance to win £500.

A special ‘clearance sale’ is now on at Saul Cass jewellers in the St Elli Shopping Centre.
Earlier this year, the Saul Cass business gave a big boost to the St Elli Shopping Centre by signing a new lease for No14 in the mall.
Saul Cass manager Anthony Gustafson said: “We are getting all geared up for new lines and new stock in the shop. The sale is being billed as a clearance sale, but no-one need get the wrong impression and think we are moving on.
“We are always here to serve the good people of Llanelli and they will be pleased to know that there are literally hundreds of bargains in our special sale.”

'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career.
