The latest Llanelli Star 'On Song' column

The latest Llanelli Star 'On Song' column about the choral scene in Llanelli -

After their successful concert at Llanelli’s Ffwrnes theatre at the weekend, Côr Meibion Llanelli (Llanelli Male Voice Choir) are finalising arrangements for a trip to Germany.
Saturday saw an evening billed as ‘Golden Voices, Golden Harp’, with the choir being joined on stage by Hannah Stone, official harpist to HRH Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, and leading Welsh soprano Gwawr Edwards.
It was a busy day for the choir as the morning saw them perform at Sandy Water Park on Llanelli’s Millennium Coastal Park for the opening of the Llanelli Scarlets Heritage Trail.
The choir’s trip to Germany will be for a special ‘Britfest’ organised by The Queen’s Dragoon Guards in Paderborn and Sennelager on the weekend of September 14.
“The choir members are on a real high after their concert on Saturday evening,” said musical director Eifion Thomas.
“It was a great evening and everyone thoroughly enjoyed.
“Now, our thoughts are turning to Germany, when we will be entertaining the unit known as the Welsh Cavalry.
“It is a great honour for us to be entertaining the troops, their families, friends and the people of Paderborn and Sennelager.”
Saturday’s concert saw long service badges (for 25 years service) handed out to choir members – Peter Griffiths (second bass), Geoff Lewis (first tenor), Trevor Lewis (second tenor) and Mel Harries (first bass).
In November, Côr Meibion Llanelli will be taking part in a glamorous evening with the stars in Ffwrnes.
The concert will be in aid of Wales’s pancreatic cancer charity Amser Justin Time.
Shan Cothi, who set up the charity in memory of her late husband, will be headlining the evening on November 16.
Shan will be joined by the very popular baritone Mark Llewelyn Evans.
Mark will be performing some songs from his new album ‘This Guy’s in Love’.
Also performing will be the young up and coming musical theatre star Samuel Morris.
Sam is 17 and currently a sixth form student at Ysgol Gyfun Y Strade. Earlier this year, to great acclaim, Samuel played the role of Marius in SA15 Stage School’s production of Les Miserables at Ffwrnes.

Llanelli’s Hywel Girls’ Choir and Hywel Boy Singers will enjoy two performances at the magnificent St. David’s Hall Cardiff later this year.
They will star in the Wales Festival of Remembrance in November and in the Christmas Spectacular at St. David’s Hall Cardiff in December in aid of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.
