Free courses to help deal with stress in Ceredigion

Free courses are being held across Ceredigion to help people better understand and deal with common problems such as depression, anxiety, panic, poor sleep and low self confidence.
Stress Control is a group class run by the new Ceredigion Local Primary Mental Health Support Service, established in line with the Mental Health Measure (Wales), new legislation that came into force last year. The service works closely with 16 GP practices and a whole range of community services to cover issues from post-natal depression to everyday stress and pressures.
The courses are delivered by Nurses, Social Workers and Health Care Support Workers in various community locations across the county.
Bleddyn Lewis is the service team leader: “Stress affects different people in different ways and our classes will empower people with advice and techniques to look after their mental health and wellbeing.
“Our courses will alternate between evenings and daytime so if you have work commitments you have a choice between times and venues.
“Stress Control is a class and not group therapy so no one should be worried about what is expected of them if they choose to attend. Our team will help put you at ease - you just need to turn up, sit back and learn some great ways to control stress.”
Dr Helen Herbert from Tanyfron Surgery in Aberaeron welcomes the new courses and encourages any member of the public who feels stressed in their day-to-day lives to consider attending:” As a GP, I see many patients with mental health problems – in fact one in four of us suffer some form or another. Most of us suffer stress at some time in our lives but stress that continues for a long time may lead to other forms of mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. It is so important that our patients are given the support that they deserve to maintain their health and well being. Stress is difficult to cope with at times but having access to information gives control back to the patient and these Stress control classes are a brilliant way of enabling this.”
Courses will be starting soon in Aberystwyth and Cardigan and the team are also planning courses in Aberaeron and Lampeter.
To find out more and to register on to a course, please contact the team text or leave a message on the mobile number 07825 997 248, by email to stresscontrol.ceredigion.hdd@wales.nhs.uk or in writing to Stress Control, Llys Steffan, Temple Terrace, Lampeter, SA48 7BJ.
Mental Health is a major priority for Hywel Dda Health Board. We want to improve the quality of life and increase opportunities for social inclusion for people experiencing mental health problems and their families and carers. Through initiatives, such as Stress Control classes, we are working to improve mental health through well-being and preventative services.
