Ireland gets its first Beer Sommeliers

Ireland's first two Beer Sommeliers have been announced by the Beer Academy.
Phil Tavey (above) and Paul Maher (top), from the Dublin beer import company Fourcorners, were accredited after passing a viva examination with Beer Academy Chief Examiner, Dr George Philliskirk.
George said “You only have to look at the company website to see that Phil and Paul live and breathe as beer advocates in their daily working life.
"It is packed with facts and figures about beer, guidance on getting beer quality absolutely right and how to match beer to food. This passion for beer sharing their beer knowledge shone through during their assessment to become Beer Academy Sommeliers.
"It is still less than a year since the Beer Academy announced its first Sommeliers and we already boast 21 Sommeliers around the world; from Norway to Australia.
"The Sommelier qualification has really caught the changing public attitude to beer. Nowadays beer drinking is about quality not quantity – and people want to understand more about what they are drinking. Our Sommeliers are ideally placed to lead them on this road of beer discovery. ”
Phil Tavey
After a flirtation with Electronic Engineering Phil Tavey received a call to the "Bar". It could be argued that beer is in his blood, that from the start he was always destined to be involved in the Beer business. He was the third generation of his family to take their place on the hallowed ground behind the taps of an Irish Freehold Pub. There he spread the message of "Good Beer" to all that would listen. Eventually he felt the need to get out on the road and bring the world of great beer to the masses! He currently works the hi-ways and bi-ways of Ireland for Fourcorners (Craft Beer importers and distributors) bringing the best beer to the people of Ireland.
Paul Maher
Paul Maher is the owner and Managing Director of Fourcorners, one of Irelands leading importers and distributors of craft beer. A keen interest in beer led Paul to switching from a market analysis role within the telecoms industry to setting up his own beer import business. “After years spent working in the UK, I knew there was a world of beer out there that we were missing out on in Ireland”. Paul has spent much of the past few years promoting the existence of craft breweries and their multitude of differing beers and beer styles to both trade and public in Ireland. “The key word we use to promote the beers we distribute is Taste. It was probably the one word that was missing from the sales and marketing approach of many of our competitors. I firmly believe that we must focus the consumers mind on the fantastic taste characteristics found in great beers.”
Fourcorners
Fourcorners is a leading beer importer and distributor to pubs, restaurants and off licenses in Ireland. The company offers many of the finest craft beers in the world; aiming to get more people drinking craft and high-quality beer for a better drinking experience, and to help smaller, passionate brewers to succeed. Their product range includes multi award-winning beers from some of the world's leading breweries, including Brooklyn Brewery, Nøgne Ø, De Halve Maan, BrewDog, Hirschbrau and more.
