Consultation on carers strategy in Hywel Dda health area

Carers in West Wales are being asked their views on a strategy which outlines how agencies will work together to support them.
Hywel Dda Health Board and the three local authorities have worked together on the draft Information and Consultation Strategy which will sets out how they will all work together to provide information to carers and include carers in the arrangements made for those they care for.
The strategy highlights the importance of effective early identification and engagement of carers, increasing take-up of carers needs assessments and the wide availability of appropriate information provision on services, support and entitlements.
Joint training and engagement with staff across agencies is recognised as being key to this process. The strategy outlines how health and social care staff will be engaged, the training which will be made available to them to ensure carers are identified at an early stage and ensure they have full access to support.
Hywel Dda Health Board Chairman and Carers Champion, Chris Martin, said: “Carers provide a huge amount of care and support in each area of the UK and it is in everyone’s interest that they are supported fully.
“The strategy outlines how important it is that carers are involved in the care of the person they look after. It is also important that they have their say on the ways we propose this to happen and therefore we would encourage you give your views on this draft strategy.”
Councillor Catherine Hughes, Carers Champion for Ceredigion County Council, said: “Identifying the needs of carers has for some time been a priority for local authorities and we welcome the opportunity of working jointly with Health Board colleagues to further support this work. The strategy itself will complement the work that is already undertaken to ensure that carers receive the opportunity of receiving carers needs assessments when appropriate.”
Carers are invited to give their views or they can go to www.hywelddahb.wales.nhs.uk/carers to view the strategy and supporting documents and find out how to give their views.
Feedback must be received by Friday 28th September 2012.
