Five attend the Funky Dragon Grand Council meeting!


Five representatives from Carmarthenshire’s Youth Council (CYC) recently attended an all Wales Funky Dragon Grand Council residential at Bangor University.
The event was hosted by Funky Dragon, Wales’ children and young people’s assembly, with the aim of highlighting issues important to young people across Wales and to bring about positive change.
At the residential, the CYC raised all the views and opinions of young people living in Carmarthenshire. Funky Dragon confirmed that their priorities for this year will be education, health and the environment.
Jamie Davies, aged 18, of Glanamman, Ryan Davies, aged 15, of Llanelli, Celt Whitburn, aged 12, of Newscastle Emlyn and Adam Cousins, aged 15, of Newcastle Emlyn, have all been elected by their peers as the CYC’s new Funky Dragon representatives. Ryan Davies has also been elected by Funky Dragon as one of the co-chairs for education, and Jamie Davies has been elected to represent the over 18s group on Funky Dragon’s Management Committee.
Ryan said: “I’m looking forward to developing ideas with decision makers, and it will be a great experience to be able to meet Welsh Assembly Ministers and question them on issues affecting young people across Wales.”
Jamie said: “As a newly elected Funky Dragon representative, I will do my best to ensure that all young people across the county will have their voices heard. We are very honoured to have been given these new responsibilities and I hope we can help make a difference.”
At the event, Ronan Lewis, aged 15, of Tumble, and Bobby Lewis, aged 16, of Tumble, were presented with a Funky Dragon plaque and an Agored Cymru Accreditation for their commitment and dedication to funky dragon over the past two years; both commented on how much they enjoyed being part of Funk Dragon and wished the new representatives all the best in their new roles.
Carmarthenshire Council’s Executive Board Member for Education and Children’s Services, Cllr. Keith Davies, added: “This is a fantastic achievement for all the young people involved. To be part of such a high profile organisation at such a young age is very commendable. I’m sure the young people will do a great job and I’m confident they will help us as an authority to become aware of the issues affecting young people across the county.”

Former Gower MP Gareth Wardell was the guest speaker at the weekly meeting of Llanelli Rotary Club held at the Stradey Park Hotel. 'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career. "Everyone in the area is hugely proud of her achievements in athletics to date," said Phil. "But we also want to see her go on and do bigger and better things.
