'Roman Day' has plenty to offer at county museum


Stories, mini-digs and treasure hunts will be the order of the day on Saturday, July 21 (10-4pm) at Carmarthenshire’s County Museum in Abergwili.
Youngsters and their families will be able to search for a ‘hoard of Roman coins’ as well as getting their hands dirty taking part in a mini archaeological dig.
All this and more makes up a full day of activities based on the Roman period and Carmarthen’s Roman past.
The day is organised by the museum for people of all ages, so children and families are welcome especially as there is no charge to attend.
Opening the event is well known TV doctor, Dr Ann, who is the highly regarded medic on S4C’s popular afternoon programmes Prynhawn Da and Wedi 3.
Famous throughout Wales, Dr Ann Rhys has Carmarthenshire links which run deep as she is a member of the governing body of Carmarthen’s University of Wales Trinity St David and a former High Sheriff of Dyfed.
She said “It is on such days that children build up happy memories of their childhood. In years to come, I hope, they will be able to remember their exciting discoveries and bring to mind how important the County Museum was for them. In organising this splendid day, the County museum is providing a wonderful resource for families across the whole of Carmarthenshire.”
During the day, there will be live exhibitions of activities which would have been common in Roman times, for example, pottery making and iron working.
There will be a photographer present to record children should they want to dress up as Romans. As well as story telling sessions and chats on Roman treasures, there will talks by specialists from Swansea University about the Romans and their influence on the Welsh industrial heritage, demonstrations of traditional crafts and opportunities to ‘ask the experts’ about life in Roman times.
The day is being co-ordinated by the County Museum’s curator, Gavin Evans and is supported by the Friends of the Carmarthenshire County Museum, an organisation dedicated to promoting the best of all that the museum has to offer. In developing its work on the Roman period, the County Museum also has links with CADW, the National Trust Wales, the Brecon Beacons National Park and Carmarthenshire County Council’s museum and tourism departments.

Former Gower MP Gareth Wardell was the guest speaker at the weekly meeting of Llanelli Rotary Club held at the Stradey Park Hotel. 'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career. "Everyone in the area is hugely proud of her achievements in athletics to date," said Phil. "But we also want to see her go on and do bigger and better things.
