VIP visitor for Healing The Wounds

There was a VIP visitor to the Bridgend HQ of the Healing The Wounds charity, the Welsh-based team which works to treat victims of PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder).
Ogmore MP Huw Irranca-Davies was on a fact-finding visit to catch up with the work of the charity.
The charity’s work has stepped up another gear in recent months, with regular treatment courses for victims of PTSD taking place at the charity’s HQ.
Healing The Wounds executive director and charity founder Kevin Richards said: “Mr Irranca-Davies seemed genuinely interested in the treatments for post traumatic stress that we deliver to our veterans of the Armed Forces.
“We were delighted that he spent his time listening to us.
“Healing the Wounds is forging ahead with plans to set up a dedicated residential facility within Wales for the treatment of PTSD and we are currently considering a number of affordable options.”
Healing the Wounds secretary Carol Richards, who is also a trained PTSD treatment practitioner, said: “Our practitioners already deliver an extremely effective three/four-day therapeutic course for veterans and sufferers of PTSD.
“But we are rapidly outgrowing our present facility and need to find suitable, larger premises in the South Wales area to carry on treating the brave men and women who need our help.
“The charity has a growing waiting list of sufferers, but we do need extra funds to continue the valuable treatment work that we carry out here.
“It is not over-stating the case to say that our treatment courses are life-changing experiences. To see a PTSD victim before one of our courses and then to see them again after they have been through the treatment programme is wonderful to behold. It is a brilliant transformation.
“As a charity relying on public donations, we are in need of cash support and we are desperately in need of volunteer fund-raisers to help us raise money to continue the work we do.”
The Healing The Wounds charity recently applied for funding from armed forces charity giants Help4Heroes, only to be told that there were no funds available for Wales.
Healing the Wounds is based at Office 26 at the Enterprise Centre in Tondu.
The centre manager, Gareth Jones, has been a huge help in providing extra temporary rooms, which are frequently offered to the charity free of charge while treatment sessions are being held.
Mr Richards said: “Without the help and generosity of the management and staff here at the Enterprise Centre, Healing The Wounds would need to use precious funds to hire rooms for treatments elsewhere, as therapy is offered on a one-to-one basis with a practitioner.
“Our aim is to provide treatment and accommodation under one roof, but at present the charity doesn't have the funds to offer this service. We are hopeful, however, that with continued support from the Welsh public we will be able to build on the strong foundations we have now established as a charity.
“One of our key mission statements is to make sure that money raised in Wales, thanks to the support of the great Welsh public, stays in Wales for the treatment of brave men and women who require treatment for PTSD.
“Other charities cannot live up to this mission statement as they will raise funds and then spend the money raised in other centres in England. Our charity’s roots are in Wales and we think it is crucially important that people suffering from PTSD in Wales receive treatment close to their homes and their families and friends.”
Anyone wishing to help raise funds or hold an event for the charity can send an email to events manager Amie Phillips amie@healingthewounds.co.uk or contact the Healing The Wounds office on 01656 728281.
