Top award for Aberystwyth academic


Dr Heike Roms from Aberystwyth University has been awarded the inaugural David Bradby TaPRA Award for Research in International Theatre and Performance, for outstanding research in any area of Theatre and Performance Studies.
The award is sponsored by the UK’s TaPRA Theatre and Performance Research Association and named in honour of the late Professor David Bradby, one of the leading voices in theatre research in the UK.
Dr Roms was presented with the award at TaPRA’s annual conference, held this year at the University of Kingston.
Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the research team from the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies at Aberystwyth University, which includes research assistant Dr Rebecca Edwards, produced an online resource which locates the early history of performance art in Wales between 1965 and 1979.
The website, “It was forty years ago today” – Locating the early history of performance art in Wales 1965-1979, features events such as Happenings in Cardiff in 1965, “Fluxus” in Aberystwyth in 1968 and improvised music on Anglesey in 1970.
The research team spent two years combing through the archives, at major National collections such as the National Library of Wales and the Tate Archive in London, but also in numerous private collections and supported by hours of interviews with key individuals who were there.
The work was commended by the judges as a ‘significant research project’, ‘most original and far-reaching' and 'exemplary in the level of engagement over time with a specific topic'.
Dr Roms said “We were honoured to receive this award. It reflects an increasing recognition for the important and fascinating developments in artistic experimentation that were carried out in Wales during the 1960s and 1970s.”
“The hope is now that the resource, covering some 650 events in all, will be used to gain a better insight into the way in which performance art, and its affiliated networks and institutions, emerged and developed here in Wales, the UK and beyond.”

Former Gower MP Gareth Wardell was the guest speaker at the weekly meeting of Llanelli Rotary Club held at the Stradey Park Hotel. 'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career. "Everyone in the area is hugely proud of her achievements in athletics to date," said Phil. "But we also want to see her go on and do bigger and better things.
