Harvest Flower Festival planned for church


What a challenge! A flower festival at the back end of the year!
But that is what the creative members of St Michael’s Church in Llanfihangel Abercywyn have taken on.
The theme of the flower festival is Harvest Home and it will feature some of the most enchanting aspects of a country autumn celebration.
The festival opens on Thursday, September 29 and continues until Sunday, October 2.
At the opening Harvest Festival service on Thursday evening (7pm), the guest preacher will be the Venerable Dr William Strange, Archdeacon of Cardigan.
The service will be followed by a harvest supper at The Forge Restaurant on the A40 near St Michael’s Church.
The church will be open for people to come and visit on Friday, Saturday (10am - 5pm) and Sunday (12am - 5pm) to see the floral displays and enjoy seasonal refreshments at the Church Room.
The President of the festival is John Williams (O J Williams) from St Clears and his partner, Valerie Pittman, will be opening the festival on the Thursday evening.
The flower festival will end with a gala concert in the church at 7.30pm on the Sunday evening (Oct 2), featuring Joy Cornock (soprano), the Carmarthen Male Voice Choir and compere Brian Walters.
The Mayor and Mayoress of St Clears, Cllr and Mrs Mark Davies, have also been invited to the closing concert on the Sunday.
The vicar, the Reverend Canon Bryan Witt, said “Flowers enhance our lives throughout the year and they are especially welcome in the autumn when winter is on its way. This festival provides a special opportunity for them to bring us together as a community. We hope that many people who have enjoyed our flower festivals in previous years will come and visit us at some time during the festival.”
The festival is being co-ordinated by national award winning floral artist, Lilwen Thomas from St Clears.

Former Gower MP Gareth Wardell was the guest speaker at the weekly meeting of Llanelli Rotary Club held at the Stradey Park Hotel. 'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career. "Everyone in the area is hugely proud of her achievements in athletics to date," said Phil. "But we also want to see her go on and do bigger and better things.
