Countdown on to Dunvant Carnival


The countdown is on to the annual Dunvant RFC Carnival, which takes place at the rugby club on Saturday, July 2.
One of the highlights of the day will be a ‘Dunvant’s Got Talent’ competition.
And the organisers have put down a challenge to pubs, clubs and teams to take part in the Tug of War competition.
“We really have something for everyone at the carnival,” said one of the organisers, Martin Newbury.
“It’s a real community day and we are looking forward to seeing everyone taking part and enjoying the day.”
The first auditions for ‘Dunvant’s Got Talent’ have already taken place and the grand final will take place on carnival day.
This year, there has also been competition for schoolchildren to design the carnival programme.
Two pupils from Cila primary school received vouchers for the carnival totalling £20 each. All entries will be displayed in the clubhouse on the day of the carnival. More than 2000 programmes have been printed.
The Carnival has been organised by supporters of the Dunvant RFC Under 15s and other members of the Junior and Mini sections.
The carnival starts at 1pm. There will be stalls, displays, paintballing for over 12s, live music, a hog roast, entertainment from the St.Thomas Irish Dance Group and a 50/50 prize raffle draw.

The tug of war competition will have sections for both under and over 18s. The entrance fee is £10 per team and the winners scoop half the pot.

'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career.
