Q and A on the HPC Wales project - Part III
Here are some Q&As on the HPC Wales high performance computer project (see earlier posts on this blog for more information) -
What are the key benefits to Wales?
HPC Wales will bring a broad range of benefits across industry and academia.
1) It will support a broad portfolio of research and development in high-impact sectors bringing in an additional economic impact of £2.72m pa - £22.8m over 10 years.
2) It will support industrial engagement, innovation and commercial activity which is anticipated to develop a significant amount of employment in industry across Wales with an economic impact of £16.25m.
3) The core HPC operations of the initiative. The direct initial impact of this activity is £2.67m per annum plus a direct economic impact of some £20.15m over 10 years.
4) Linkages within supported organisations and their supply chains will create additional in direct benefits across the wider economy.
5) Anticipated it will create 405 high quality jobs.
6) It will provide opportunities for exploiting developments in cutting edge computing and computational sciences which will further the development of the knowledge economy.
7) Create new businesses.
These are the direct and measurable impacts.
Examples of demand
Each of the Welsh Assembly Government Priority sectors was appraised to identify opportunities and appraise need and demand. Applications are as diverse as they are plentiful, ranging from dough-mixing process optimisation (Swansea) through pharmaceutical and pigment development (Cardiff) to wheelchair crash simulation (Glamorgan). Before funding was fully secured, companies were already registering their interest.
How will it work?
The preferred option is hub and spoke model with the two hubs being Cardiff and Pembroke Dock. This dual-Hub model provides resilience, shared storage and a wider use of possible applications. The Hubs will be linked by high speed connections to each other, to the spokes at other Universities and business centres, and to the wider UK and global HPC network.
