Fast Facts about the Fujitsu-HPC Wales link
£40 million - the total value of the project. High Performance Computing Wales (HPC Wales) is an ambitious £40 million project to give businesses and universities involved in commercially-focussed research across Wales access to the most advanced and evolving computing technology available.
£15 million - core contract value over four years to Fujitsu.
£3 million - potential additional funding available through draw down on the Framework Contract.
150 – estimated number of projects to run on system in first years of operation. Some of these will have involvement with the Fujitsu research teams.
£4 million– the level of partnership support and funding coming from Fujitsu. This represents significant inward investment
£1.84 million – the value of the staff Fujitsu will be placing in Wales to deliver the contract. Fujitsu will allocate two researchers and a HPC specialist to Wales, working directly on the project.
£1.5 million – the value of the PhD fund which would help up to 20 students across the partner universities. The students will work on projects that benefit Welsh companies and help progress cutting-edge HPC/ITC work. They will assist in sector advancements in computational-based research which will crate economic impacts.
450 – The number of people employed by Fujitsu in Wales, with offices in Swansea and Cardiff, making it one of the biggest Japanese employers in the region.
10 years plus - HPC Wales and Fujitsu see this as a longer term partnership (10 years+) and are committed to working to develop a sustainability plan past the funding period.
Team Fujitsu - For delivery of the project Fujitsu will be putting a team in place, including a Technology Implementation Team, Outreach Consultants and Computation Science Research staff, who will also be able to draw on the wider global Fujitsu resources.
Big name sub-contractors - Named sub contractors will also be working closely with Wales as a result of HPC Wales. For example, Intel and Microsoft.
£19 million – funding for the project from ERDF and ESF European funds channelled through the Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO).
£10 million - funding for the project from the UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).
£4 million - funding for the project from collaborating institutions.
£5 million - funding for the project from the Welsh Assembly Government/Higher Education Funding Council Wales (HEFCW).
£2 million - funding for the project from private sector and research income.
