Llanelli school passes the test
A Llanelli school which was the first in Carmarthenshire to be inspected under a new framework has passed with flying colours.
Ysgol Gymraeg Brynsierfel was also one of the first schools in Wales to be inspected using the new guidance.
The Estyn inspection team noted that almost all pupils made solid progress in their learning and that their skills were consistently good.
Pupils were found to make very good progress in their use of Welsh from the time they began in the school.
The report stated that behaviour was consistently good and that the curriculum was broad with a clear focus on developing pupils’ skills.
The inspectors said the school was a very close and caring community which ensured equal opportunities for every pupil, and that it had positive relationships with parents and carers.
Parents expressed positive opinions about the school; they felt that the teaching was good and that they received good information about their children’s progress.
The report was welcomed by the school’s governing body, and by headteacher Susan Bowen, who said: “We are very proud of the schools achievements in the recent inspection and look forward to maintaining the good standards when we move to our new school building next summer. I should like to thank the staff and Governors for their dedication to Ysgol Gymraeg Brynsierfel.”
Work is currently in progress on building a £6.5million new school which will provide first class accommodation for 210 pupils plus a nursery which will cater for 26 children.
Contractors Kier Western are progressing with the building which will be split level and contain many features of architectural interest.
Ysgol Gymraeg Brynsierfel is the latest school to be built through Carmarthenshire County Council’s Modernising Education Provision (MEP) programme and is part of the authority’s plan to meet growing demand for Welsh medium education in Llanelli.
Carmarthenshire’s education executive board member Cllr Gwynne Wooldridge said: “Congratulations to the school on this very good report. I am also pleased to see work progressing so well on the new building which will help us meet the growing demand for Welsh medium education in Llanelli, and is an excellent example of what our MEP is all about – improving the opportunities and facilities for all children in Carmarthenshire.”
