Latest 'View from Richmond Park' column

The latest 'View from Richmond Park' Carmarthen Town AFC column from the Carmarthen Journal -
Carmarthen Town AFC is a club with connections everywhere – as we showed last week in this column when we recited the history of former player Robert ‘Bobby’ Jones, uncle to Hollywood star Catherine Zeta Jones.
Believe it or not, but it’s possible to link the club to the winner of this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, the great AP McCoy.
AP is, of course, the best jump jockey of his generation, and has ridden on many occasions for Carmarthen racehorse trainer Alison Thorpe.
Alison, meanwhile, is better known to everyone at Richmond Park as the daughter of Don Jenkins, of our most loyal supporters, home and away.
Don retired many moons ago as a superintendent with the Dyfed-Powys Police force, but he keeps himself busy in his retirement as a full-time football fan and part-time racehorse owner.
For many years after his retirement from the force he was chief steward at Swansea City’s old ground at Vetch Field.
Don has many fond memories of his time at Vetch Field, particularly the occasions when the club mascot, Cyril the Swan, misbehaved.
On one such occasion, Cyril tore the head off Zampa the Lion, Millwall’s mascot. Cyril booted the head into the celebrated North Bank, by all accounts.
Such behaviour was bound to land the mascot in hot water and on one occasion Cyril was summoned to a disciplinary hearing by the Football Association of Wales (FAW) and had to attend in his full regalia.
Don is, of course, very proud of the fact that the Carmarthen Town mascot is much better behaved than Cyril the Swan!

The Carmarthen Town clubhouse at Richmond Park is now becoming a mecca for darts players.
A number of darts tournaments are scheduled at the revamped clubhouse – and bar manager Mark Hannington is delighted with the response.
“We have great facilities here at Richmond Park and we want to see them in use seven days a week. There’s quite a buzz when the darts boys and girls come in and we look forward to staging many tournaments here,” said Mr Hannington.
“In addition, we have a number of other organisations setting up ‘home’ here at Richmond Park, everyone from camera clubs to Slimming World, painting classes and knitting classes.
“As far as we are concerned, the more the merrier. And if anyone wants an informal chat about the facilities we have an offer here at Richmond Park, they are welcome to give me a ring on 07929 509539.
