Pentre Nicholas Village scoops top award
A Llanelli site that was once an illegal gypsy encampment and burning ground for stolen cars has been transformed to a stunning housing estate acclaimed the best in Britain.
Pentre Nicholas Village, phases 4a and 5, Machynys, Llanelli, not only represented Wales and won the 2010 LABC (England and Wales) Building Excellence Awards in the best large housing category last week, but also won the supreme award as being best of the best development anywhere in the UK.
Competition for the supreme award involved eleven categories including Wimbledon and its sliding roof and other prestigious building developments across Britain at the National Building Excellence Awards hosted at the Brewery in the City of London.
The awards celebrate the excellence of building quality of a variety of projects across the UK from large commercial developments, education and housing projects to domestic refurbishment together with awards for technical innovation, best partnership and sustainability.
Machynys owner and developer Jim Anderson said: “We could never have dreamed when we started this project more than five years ago to design American-styled New England homes on Llanelli’s impressive reclaimed coastline that we would achieve such heights.
“It has all been down to superb teamwork between Powell Dobson Architects, the contractor Machynys Homes Construction and Carmarthenshire County Council.
“We were honoured to have just been at the awards and winning our category but to have taken ‘best of the best’ was a complete shock against such prestigious developments, some in the heart of London.
“Our ethos is about outstanding quality and location. Our next housing venture - currently under wraps - is at SA1.”
County executive board member for housing, Huw Evans, said: “This is a tremendous accolade for the wonderful regeneration strides being made not only in Llanelli but across the Carmarthenshire by the county council with award winning projects and developments.
“Llanelli was never considered to be a seaside town but the transformation of the industrial scar that was its coast to the award winning Millennium Coastal Park of which Pentre Nicholas Village is a part, is one of the great UK regeneration success stories.
“The success of the Machynys development and Jim Anderson’s team working with the county’s local authority building control team proves that quality work pays off.”
Nearly 600 guests were entertained atbthe awards ceremony by author, broadcaster and former MP Gyles Brandreth.
Money was also raised for LABC President Mick Henman’s charity – the British Heart Foundation.
The event was sponsored by Elmhurst Energy, Kingspan Insulation, LABC New Home Warranty and noise.co.uk.
The complete list of winners, finalists and project descriptions can be found on the LABC Awards website at www.labcbuildingexcellenceawards.uk.com.
