Carmarthenshire link to 2012 Olympics

Athletes at the 2012 Olympics will be tucking into organic yoghurt cheese from Carmarthenshire as part of their healthy eating during the Games.
Sanclêr Organic has won a contract to supply food to the Games in London following a visit to the Speciality and Fine Food Show in the capital recently. The company will be providing products for the athletes, hospitality etc.
Elfyn Davies, who runs Sanclêr Organic with his wife Rhian, said he made the application after speaking to Carmarthenshire County Council business development officer Barry Davies.
He sent off information about the business, its history and how he farms, before meeting representatives of the Olympics at the Speciality and Fine Food Fair.
“They were very interested in developing healthy menus for the athletes for breakfast and dinner. They are choosing a catering company in December and will come back to us in January to go through the whole thing, devise menus and get our products in there.
“They were excited about our product as it ticks all their boxes on natural products, no additives, organics and the way we farm naturally.
“They have invited us to come up the Olympic Village over the event, talk about our products and meet the people. It will be a very busy time and it’s all quite exciting,” he said.
With the continued support for the food and drink industry in the county, Carmarthenshire County Council attended the Speciality and Fine Food Fair under the banner of Carmarthenshire Food and Drink.
Sanclêr was one of the exhibitors at the event with Caws Cenarth, Carmarthenshire Cheese, Prima Foods, Calon Wen, Parsons and Café Fair Trade.
Council business development officer Barry Davies said: “The news for Sanclêr is excellent and feedback from the other producers is also very encouraging, with numerous contracts already in the pipeline.
“Attendance at such events is very important and the success over the years continues for the producers.”
Executive board member for regeneration and leisure Cllr Clive Scourfield said: “This is quite a coup for Sanclêr and for Carmarthenshire.
“Organic food is very much on the up and up. Being able to export to a prestigious event such as the Olympics is very much a feather in the cap of Carmarthenshire producers.”
