New handbook in spotlight at Botanic event

Visitors to the Learn With Grandma event at the National Botanic Garden of Wales near Carmarthen have had a chance to look at the new 50+ Handbook.
Members of the 50+ Forum were at the event in Llanarthne organised by Valerie Wood-Gaiger MBE of Learn With Grandma, a not for profit company that wants to encourage respect between the generations; to help instil a love of learning; help create lasting memories and to have fun.
50+ strategy development officer Kevin Pett took the opportunity to ask for opinions on the handbook called Living Life to the Full in Carmarthenshire, which covers a wide range of topics including making the most of being 50 and over, home safety, crime, caring, getting about, the environment and looking after yourself.
Local visitor Carol Bendy said: “The Handbook is excellent, easy to understand and the layout is great. I am going to have a good look at the book and may be thinking of joining the Forum.”
50+ Forum member Sandra Llewelyn said: “By being a member of the Forum I get to put forward my own opinion on what’s going on. The writing in the Handbook is easy to understand in both languages and the layout is great.”
Fellow member Rhiannon Scott said: “The benefit of being a member is getting information and being kept up to date with what’s going on.”
She would recommend people joining to have their say and thought the Handbook was very well presented, she added.
Charlie Bull, who is also a member of the Forum, said it enabled people to know what was happening in the community and express their opinion. The Forum kept in good contact with the county council. He would like all pensioners to join.
“The handbook is excellent and easy to understand in both languages,” he added.
Valerie Wood-Gaiger, of Learn With Grandma, said: “In the Forum you get your chance to have your say and find out what events are coming up.
“The Handbook is bright and cheerful with a great image of an active life.”
50+ Champion Cllr Kevin Madge said: “I am delighted that there has been such a favourable response from people who have been shown the Handbook. It will be a useful reference for people aged 50 and over in the county.”
Half-price entry to the National Botanic Garden of Wales is on offer to new and existing members of Carmarthenshire’s 50+ forum on September 28.
Council staff will be at the entrance to the Gardens offering visitors aged over 50 the opportunity to sign up for the forum and take advantage of the offer to pay £4 entry instead of £8.
Existing members of the 50+ forum will also be eligible for the reduced entry.
The new handbook will be given out during the day.
