Tasting notes from Parliamentary Beer dinner last night
Splendid evening last night at the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group awards dinner staged at One Great George Street just around the corner from Westminster.
This is what we drank (tasting notes cribbed from the menu). . .
With the starter (Brown shrimps in clarified butter)-
Black Isle Organic Wheat Beer (5% abv)

A semi-cloudy Belgian style wheat beer brewed with orange and coriander. Either pour carefully to leave the yeast in the bottom of the bottle, or swirl the last drop around the base and pour onto the head of the beer. Naturally fermented for a second time in the bottle, in a similar way to the production of Champagne. This results in a light sediment of yeast in the bottom of the bottle. It is full of Vitamin B.
Roger Protz notes - The colour of this bottle-conditioned beer is a very pale yellow/gold that pours hazy, with a thin white head. On the nose it is very fresh in style, with a clean citrus aroma, some grassyness and a little background note of burning embers. On the palate it is quite light-bodied, with an extremely clean, pure flavour of orange and a light caramel.
There’s a little spice and a clean, quite long finish. This is a light and simple style of wheat beer, but is very appetising and moreish.
With the main course (Roast belly of pork rubbed with caraway seed and garlic served with creamy mash, kale and caramelised apple) -
The Publican’s Proud of Pubs Summer Ale (4.2% abv)
Brewed by the Celt Experience Brewery, Caerphilly,Wales
A light, summery, hoppy ale with juicy, tangy, Frank Cooper’s Oxford marmalade flavours. The slightly sour nuances are a great match with garlic, apple and mash. The beer is quite orangey in colour and its flavours are backed by a reasonable level of caramelisation to soften the hop flavours.
With the pudding (Strawberry mousse laced with Champagne topped with strawberry glaze) -
P2 Czar’s Imperial Stout (8% abv)

This exceptionally smooth stout is produced from an original recipe that was shipped to the Russian port of St. Petersburg for the Czar’s Imperial Court. The smooth mellowness derives from the long maturation time before being bottled in very limited numbers. It is a beer of great pedigree that has been faithfully reproduced to give a taste of history.
