Carmarthen Town AFC latest column in Carmarthen Journal
The 'View from Richmond Park' column from this week's edition of the Carmarthen Journal . . .
Saturday (July 10) saw the annual fete and primary school football tournament held at Richmond Park, Carmarthen.
It provided further evidence of the commitment to developing youth talent at Carmarthen Town AFC.
Last season saw further milestones reached in the development of the youth structure within Carmarthen Town AFC.
A development centre for primary school children feeding into our academy structure has been established.
With teams at U12, LJ14, U15, U16 and U19 Youth levels, all the teams play in an organised Academy League.
Emlyn Schiavone, chairman of Town’s Academy Forum, explained: “When it was formed it was hoped that the youth of our locality would be encouraged to take advantage of the club's coaching facilities and develop the next generation of players to represent Carmarthen Town.
“As well as youngsters from Carmarthen, players from as far afield as Newcastle Emlyn, Ammanford, Llandeilo, Drefach and St. Clears have represented the Academy.
“Three of our U19 Academy products have made the transition to senior football to represented Carmarthen Town in the Welsh Premier League.
“A number of Academy players have been invited for trials with Cardiff City and Swansea City.
“Our five age group teams play throughout South Wales and as such are seen by Welsh and County Schools selectors and scouts attached to Football League Clubs and indeed there have been many personal achievements.
“Town's Football Academy U15s European mission to Maastricht, Holland, was an outstanding success.
“In a very challenging tournament, where more than 100 teams from Northern Europe were represented, Town's youngsters won the prestigious Geusselt Cup. The Under 16 team also had some success in winning through to the Quarter Final of the U16 Academy cup.”
Academy sessions are held at the impressive Carmarthen Athletic Indoor Training Barn under the guidance of well-qualified coaches.
The Academy is audited twice annually by the FAW Trust to ensure professionalism of development and coaching.
Academy age groups trials will be held during the summer months.
Mr Schiavone added: “Many thanks have to go to players, parents, coaches and managers for their efforts in pursuing the goal of maximising potential and achieving excellence.”
