Innvovative courses for teachers at Trinity University

The value of encouraging qualified teachers to continue learning is underlined in innovative courses now being run by Trinity University College in Carmarthen.
The School of ITET (School of Initial Teacher Education & Training) runs a successful MA Education course and is also developing a Graduate Diploma in Education.
“Both are ideal vehicles for continued professional development,” said ITET advisor Catharine Bleasdale.
“And we are finding that both courses are attracting wide interest from teachers who don’t want to stop at a base camp qualification. There are plenty of teachers out there who are keen to take the next step on the education ladder.”
Rhian Kenny, deputy headteacher at Ysgol Maesllyn Primary (Lakefield School) in Llanelli is a huge fan of the graduate diploma.
“For someone like me in middle management, it has been a hugely valuable course.
“There is a danger that when you qualify as a teacher you move straight into teaching and then don’t get the chance to think outside the box.
“Doing a course like this gives you time away from the daily pressures of the classroom. For example, there are practical elements such as learning the processes for evaluating learning and budget analysis.
“You get equipped with a whole range of skills which you can them apply back in the school and the classroom.
“On a personal level, I found the course hugely stimulating and challenging, but hugely beneficial. Without a shadow of a doubt, it has helped my career development.
“What is also crucial is that I was able to do the course part-time and balance the needs of the course with the demands of work. The flexibility that the course provides is great in that you can tailor things to achieve your goals.”
Mrs Bleasdale added that the MA course was also designed to fit in with teaching commitments.
She said the School of ITET worked closely with local education authorities to provide learning modules that were appropriate and effective.
She added:“One very successful pathway is the Middle Leaders route, where aspiring middle managers gain an insight into the skills and concepts required to be effective at this level.”
